In fair condition, lightly aged…, with slight ruckling and bleeding due to removal from mount. Signed 'Sholto Mackenzie' and addressed to 'Dear Professor Waterston'. With regard to his uncle the cardiologist Sir James Mackenzie (1853-1925), he thanks Waterston 'for sending the reprint of the article on my uncle's heart, which I am very pleased [?] to have. I read it in the British Heart Journal when it first came out, and was very interested. It is remarkable how his pathological findings fit in so well with what he observed in himself.' He hopes Waterston is 'not being too oried by these odd times'. For the past four years he had been working in the Ministry of Health, 'doing a lot of the cancer work, but that has, I fear, been a bit curtailed with this war'.

Each photograph is mounted to card stock and designed for viewing through a stereoscopic viewer (not included.) This New Revised Edition was produced in 1911 (with…74 images more than the previous issue) to aid medical students in familiarizing themselves with human anatomy in advance of the increasingly expensive dissection of an actual body. The set includes 321 original b&w silver gelatin stereoscopic photographs, each 6.25 x 3.5 inches with two images, mounted to a 7- x 9-inch card. The images are mounted at the bottom of each card with small numbers corresponding to the descriptions above the images. They are housed in 10 slipcases with mounted labels to the spine and a tray containing the images and title cards. A total of 331 of the original 335 cards (4 cards missing). CONDITION: The images are all very good though some have faded and/or yellowed slightly; the cards are very good, though most have a slight curve to them. The slipcases are in good, fair, or poor condition, all showing degrees of shelf wear from moderate to considerable. Slipcases 1, 2, 3, 7, and 9 are black cloth or paper over boards. The slipcases to 4, 5, 6, 8, and 10 are tan and complete with both the outer and inner trays present. Slipcase 1 is missing its inner tray; Slipcase 3's inner tray is missing the bottom panel and one side is detached. For trays 7 and 9, the outer slipcases with spine labels are missing (See photos). Each volume will be carefully wrapped and padded in a shipment of 2 or more sturdy cartons. The images are divided as such: SECTION I: Cranio-Cerebral Topography & Central Nervous System; title card + 29 stereo cards (2 cards missing). In 1913, while Professor of Anatomy at King's College, London, he was the first authority to debunk the… Piltdown Man hoax. 2pp, 4to. 49 lines of closely-written text. Addressed to 'My dear Waterston' and signed 'James H. Bryce'. In fair condition, somewhat creased and aged. He explains the ill health and circumstances that forced him to miss Waterston's 'paper & exhibit' at the Society of Antiquaries the previous Saturday, and complains of the bad weather and its effect on his injury. Waterston is 'lucky in having three able sons'. He himself had his only son 'called back to the colours from the Emergency Reserve and is on Instruction at the R. A. Camp at Shrivenham in Wilts'. He has worried over the safety of Waterston's department 'when the Bute buildings were injured', but is pleased to hear 'that none of the contents of the anatomical department were injured'. He regrets not being able to take up Waterston's invitation to visit St Andrews: 'a train journey is impossible - and my self-driven motoring is also over'. He describes how his brother and his family have come to live with him as 'evacuees from Edinburgh'. He ends in the hope of one day being able to see Waterston's 'ivory buckle', with a comment on the 'high' artistry of the bronze age both in Scotland and Ireland.

'New edition' of this remarkable, graphic, and at times gruesome pathological atlas of anatomy prepared under the auspices of the Department of Anatomy at the University of Edinburgh, and of particular appeal in retaining the original wooden and metal stereoscopic viewer, most often now missing. The five 'volumes' of boxed illustrations (resembling books with spine titles and designed to fit library shelves), contain some 250 thick cards each mounted with stereoscopic images together with accompanying explanatory text, and provide a vivid, realistic and unprecedented three dimensional view of the entire human body, helping students to gain important insights into the structure and spaces of the body. The invention of photography had a big impact on anatomical teaching, but, like drawings, was limited by being a two dimensional representation. Stereoscopy in fact predates photography, but its mass appeal depended entirely upon the development of photographic processes. Originally little more than an optical toy, once it was amalgamated with photography it became a uniquely powerful medium. 'Stereo photography combined the work of two Victorian inventors, Sir Charles Wheatstone and Sir David Brewster, who used photography to popularise their discoveries. Stereo negatives when exposed in a camera produced two almost identical photographs which were then placed in a viewer that enabled them to be seen three dimensionally' (Powerhouse Museum). Stereographs, double images (taken from positions equivalent to those of the left and right eyes) presented side-by-side on a flat card and looked at through a special viewer, were displayed to great effect at the Great Exhibition in 1851, and quickly became something of a phenomenon. Initially largely for domestic use, the educational opportunities, especially for the medical profession, were soon recognised. Improved photographic technology in the second half of the 19th century further simplified the production of stereographs. The first first atlas of medicine was produced by Albert Neisser (1855-1916), who between 1894 and 1911 produced 57 boxed sets. The date of the original edition of The Edinburgh Stereoscopic Atlas of Anatomy, overseen by the Scottish physician David Cunningham (1850-1909), is unclear though is believed to be around 1905-1906 (based on contemporary reviews, although Roberta McGrath in 'Seeing Her Sex' p. 144 suggests 1890), with this, the 'New Edition' thought to date from 1907. David Waterston, was a lecturer and senior demonstrator at the Anatomical Department of Edinburgh and prepared the anatomical dissections. The first edition was issued by the Caxton Publishing Company. Over time, it was expanded to ten volumes, that included 324 stereographs, with issues also produced in the US and Canada. An equally graphic 'Edinburgh Stereoscopic Atlas of Obstetrics' was issued in 1908-1909, edited by George Simpson and Edward Burnet.

Both items are lightly aged, and both bear traces of previous mount: the second is ruckled at one edge, and has lost part of the signature, and a few words from the conclusion of the letter, which runs lengthwise along the top of the first page. Both addressed to 'Mrs. Waterston', and both signed 'Katharine Atholl'. ONE (24 January 1940): 2pp, 4to. She is 'horrified' to have had a letter she wrote some months ago returned, and asks for her 'stupidity' to be forgiven. She gives a good report of her husband's recovery: they hope to 'get north' in the week that follows. 'I am so sorry to have troubled you further by leaving my mackintosh behind. Would be useful here just now!' TWO ([8 February] 1940): 2pp, 4to. She thanks her for sending the mackintosh and is enclosing '6d for postage. I was very glad to have the oat in all the rain & snow here!' She also thanks her for 'Professor Leon's book', which she could not manage at present. She doesn't believe that she 'meant to suggest that moral courage was the highest possible virtue, though I rank it very high.' She continues with reference to 'the nation's affairs', democracy, 'the laws of sedition or libel', 'the necessity for faith' and God and 'the battle against evil'.

In 1913, while Professor of Anatomy at King's College, London, he was the first authority to debunk the Piltdown Man hoax. The three items are in fair condition, lightly aged, with slight ruckling and aging. All three are folded for postage. Each letter is signed 'J. W. Struthers'. ONE (TLS, 20 March 1941): 2pp, 4to. A long letter, single-spaced. He has been 'at East Fortune where we were waiting expectantly for work which never came except in the form of a handful of army waste, if I may call it so'. While there he heard news of Waterston's illness and recovery 'from a Miss Hudson'. He complains that 'Occasionally a little news comes through about old friends but it is scanty', and would like to hear about his 'boys and their doings', having 'the very pleasantest recollections of the times I spent with your two as house surgeons. Our association was, to me, wholly delightful with possibly one very slight disappointment. They both played golf much better than I did.' He would like to ask him 'about the G. M. C. and about teaching in general'. He gives some personal news and states 'We still have a certain number of mutual acquaintances left to gossip about so that if an opportunity arises I look forward to pleasant exchanges.' TWO (TLS, 5 April 1941): 1p, 4to. He and his wife are thrilled at the thought of spending a night at the Waterstons'. 'The only difficulty in the way is that I am in the course of arranging to take over wards in the Royal again and shall probably begin about the 15th, so that I shall be rather tied. I think, however, that I am now a big enough swell to be called away for a day to Fife'. He describes possible travel arrangements and brings the subject back to golf: 'I may tell you that I played a round over no 1 Gullane this afternoon in a piercing north easterly, carrying my own clubs, feeling that in spite of the trying weather we are having I had better find out whether I could stand up a round or not. The result did not produce a feeling of wild optimism but, on the other hand, a 2 hole lead on the 18th green left an impression of quiet confidence which is reassuring.' THREE (ALS, 10 August 1941): 2pp, landscape 12mo. He is sending a 'pleasing letter from D. G.', showing him to be 'in great form'; and also warns Waterston that he 'played my first golf since May yesterday afternoon and I wish to warn you that I am still going strong and I should think about 3 strokes better than on the day when we last met'. Otherwise he is 'greatly perturbed. One of my friends has entrusted himself to an Osteopath - In ordinary life he is quite intelligent. Another has pinned his faith to a homeopath - in ordinary life he passes as a scientific man. A third friend has turned Roman Catholic and now I am ondering how we can possibly win the war!'.

She explains that she has not been able to 'complete the work in the five weeks' because another doctor 'left on Friday taking with her one complete years records of the eight years we have been working on'. Nevertheless, she hopes to 'finish the foundations of the investigation by 15th. January'. Professor Greenwood wants to see her after seeing the doctor with the records. TWO (10 August 1940): 2pp, 4to. Begins: 'Dear Professor Waterton / I asked at the management Committee meeting on 26th. March for permission to apply to the M[edical]. R[esearch]. C[ouncil]. for a personal grant to investigate the effects of infant feeding on the health & nutrition in children observed from brith for 5-10 years.' Because of a misunderstanding with 'Dr. Orr', she did not apply to the M. R. C. 'In these rather unfortunate Circumstances perhaps it would be better to wait a little longer [.] In the only communication I have had from Professor Greenwood since January - a note on 14th. March - he said that "he did not expect to be in a position to make a final report at present", though the tabulation was done.' THREE (8 October 1940): 2pp, landscape 8vo. She has 'received intimations from the Medical Research Council of a personal part time post of £200 p. a. together ith an expences post not exceeding £100 p. a. dating from 1. 10. 40. They wish me as a "preliminary to any further investigation" to do what Professor T R Elliott calls the "general arithmetic" of the material gathered in the years 1920-1940. They wish to know the total number of children born each year at St Andrews, the number who have died, those who entered the Child Welfare Centre, those who entered the Institute & attended from 2 to 5 years & also after 5 years.' She expresses delight at the opportunity to do so, as she believes 'it would make a good background for any conclusions which may be drawn from any analyses of the clinical data.'.

In fair condition, lightly ruckled, and with slight loss to the edge of one page, and the ink of one leaf having slightly run on removal from mount. ONE (8 September 1939): 2pp, 8vo. Begins by discussing the 'laboratory work' which 'Colonel Mitchell' said he would probably get 'when he first suggested my entering the R.A.M.C. T.A.' He hopes that Waterston will not need him 'at the Bute' until the war is over, and sends his regards to his family. TWO (9 February 1940): 4pp, 4to. While on duty in France he gives news of his activities: 'Our work is at present to form hospitals and turn in a hospital for German measles. I expect I shall get it myself and when I look in the mirror I shall see what my former hero has done for me - another attack of German measles! I confess that every new record of German atrocity comes as a shock to me still, for Germany and the Germans were once surrounded by romance for me - as you know. In spite of the unhappiness of my last visit to Germany I have happy memories of my work at Bonn and the people whom I met there. Now they are all enemies.' THREE (28 April 1940): 4pp, 4to. He begins with personal and professional news, before commenting: 'It is very difficult to think about research work here. The Royal Society of Medicine will not send me the books - barring text-books - for one thing. However, I am settling down to read for the final F.R.C.S. again and will keep up my Anatomy. I may never have the opportunity to sit the examination or to get into a surgical ward to prepare for it, but at any rate I shall be able to return to St. Andrews with ideas of value for teaching purposes [.] Of course if war breaks out in France these plans for reading will break down, but I am making them because I am afraid of losing touch with the academic work, and growing stale especially if the war lasts.'.
