Napolitano Was One The Last General Artist-Craftsmen, Educated At Chouinard In The Early 1920'S, Working Initially In Architectural Murals But Thereafter In All Media From That Time Into The 1970'S, But Never Part Of The Institutional Art World At Any Time, And Reduced To Commercial And Religious Work After The End Of The Wpa In The Late 1930'S. The Archive, About 10 Boxes. Includes Papers And Drawings Regarding His Work In Almost All Media, Including Architectural Painting, Sgraffito, Murals, Oils, Sculpture, Textiles, Drawings, Studio Props And Sets, And Also Art For Many Churches In The Southwest; His Correspondence And Personal Papers; 2 Boxes Of Photographs And Slides; Several Boxes Of Autobiographical Writings With Several Drafts Of A Projected Autobiography, Sketches Etc. Napolitano Studied At Otis Circa 1922-1924, Particularly Under Sculptor Julia Bracken Wendt, And At Chouinard, Where He Did A Bust Of Mrs. Chouinard In 1924. Starting In 1925 He Apprenticed On Commercial Architectural Work Under Muralist Herman [Hermann] Sachs In Los Angeles, Where He Worked On Important Commissions For John Parkinson, Et Al, Such As Los Angeles City Hall, Bullock's Wilshire, And The Title Guaranty Building He Worked On Other Architectural Projects 1925-1931, Including The Hotel That Is Now The Palm Beach Biltmore, Etc. He Studied Ceramics In New York State In 1930, Then Studied Art In Germany Circa 1930-1931, Then Worked On Buildings In New York Circa 1931/1932, And Then Returned To Los Angeles. He Began Work For The Wpa And Through That Work Became A Friend Of Merle Armitage, Impresario And Book Designer, And At That Time Southern California Director Of The Wpa. Armitage Wrote A Book "Napolitano" In 1935, And Used Napolitano Frequently To Illustrate His Books From 1934 Through The 1950'S. ( Napolitano In Turn Collected Armitage's Books, Letters, And Ephemera, Of Which Most Of Armitage's Books And Several Decades Of Their Correspondence And Drawings And Much Armitage Ephemera Are Also Available Separately). Napolitano Taught At Chouinard, And He Is Prominently Featured In Their Catalogs In The Late 1930'S. Napolitano Began Designing Textiles For His Future Wife Emmie Goetz Circa 1928, And Continued Designing For Her Work After Their Marriage Upon His Return From Germany.
