Title.jpg the title page from volume 19; volume 17 title page is clean, no issues. . *** THE SUBJECT: This series contained a large number of superb color woodblock art work, including birds, flowers, animals, Japanese style paintings, traditional subjects, tiger, cat, fan maker, Samurai, Dharma, landscapes & scenery. . *** THE CONTRIBUTING ARTISTS: . WATANABE Seitei [aka. studio name: Shohtei] [1851-1918]: . Was a Japanese style painter, adopted by the Watanabe family of painters. Pupil of Kikuchi Yoosai. He traveled to Europe & America, in 1878 was awarded a silver medal for painting shown at the Paris Exposition. He wrote several books on painting and was editor of BIJUTSU SEKAI the item we offer now. He also edited KACHO GAFU: BIRD & FLOWER PAINTINGS, a famous 3 volume set. . In 1878 he travelled in the United States and Europe, attending the 1878 International Exhibition. He remained in Paris for three years, becoming the first Nihon-ga artist to live in Europe with the aim of studying Western painting. . Above all he was a world-renounced KACHO painter [Flower & Bird], for which he was quite famous. He is well collected by world museums & libraries. See Roberts below for more biography. . He was a Japanese style painter, and used the Go [studio names] of Chitora, Genroku, Tomotaro and others. Son of a Nagoya Samurai, studied under the Shijo-school painter Numata Gessai. Later studied in Kyoto under Tosa Mitsubumi, painting some screens in the Sentoh Palace as his master's assistant. Later became principal of Arita Arts & Crafts school, also taught at Tokyo School of Fine Arts, member of the Nihon Bijutsu-in of the commission. See Roberts below for more biography. . * THE TITLE: The title BIJUTSU SEKAI: WORLD OF FINE ARTS journal was serially issued and is complete in 24 volumes. .
