Mustard cloth boards, with debossed brown lettering on the front cover and spine, housed in a red cloth portfolio with printed paper label. The book contains 48 high quality color offset reproductions of stencil prints (Katazome) by Sadao Watanabe, inspired by biblical stories. The artist used both kozo paper (from mulberry tree) and momigami (kneaded paper) in his pints. The momigami paper being crumpled by hand, squeezed and wrinkled to give a rough-hewn quality. Watanabe, a Japanese Christian, was a student of the famous textile designer Serizawa Keisuke, and was associated with Mingei folk arts movement. Included are a table of contents, index of plates and biographical text by theologian and professor Masao Takenaka. All sections with text in both Japanese and English. Original descriptive price slip laid in. Box with lvery light foxing, colors fof print ine. Box in very good, portfolio, binding and interior in near fine condition.

Signed in pencil by 12 x 16' on handmade washi paper dyed deep burgundy and painted in white, blue, green and yellow with black stenciling. Depicts the arrival of the good Samaritan at the inn, wounded man seated on his donkey, two onlookers and a bird watching from the inn as the good samaritan touches the wounded man's forehead in an intimate and compassionate gesture. Born and raised in Tokyo, Sadao Watanabe was orphaned at age 10, adopted by a neighboring couple, and was baptized as a Christian at 17. After quitting school to work full time in a dyer's shop, he became apprentice of Serizawa Keisuke, from whom he learned the traditional katazome stencil dyeing technique. He soon became active in the 'mingei' movement, devoted to recovering traditional Japanese folk art techniques. Watanabe was bed-ridden for two years with tuberculosis and believed he experienced healing in answer to his prayers. As an expression of gratitude for this divine mercy, Watanabe vowed to devote his artistic abilities exclusively to illustrating stories from the Scriptures. A special emphasis were the stories of healing in the Gospels. Watanabe's artistic process was intensely laborious, partnering with his wife in the production of all materials in the process, from paper to paste to dye. Beginning with a paper-cut stencil outline, layers of color would be painted by hand with paste protecting the negative then washed off and reapplied for each subsequent color. As Sandy Kita explains, 'each print in a run by Watanabe is 'unique,' differing slightly from every other, because the artist painted in the colors by hand and neither sought to nor could completely control the permeation of the black into the paper . Softcover/Paperback. 35 unaufgeschnittene Doppelblätter mit 25 ganzseitigen Grafiken (Linol oder Holzschnitt) teilweise farbig. 16 x 16 cm Watanabe erlernte die traditionelle Siebdrucktechnik Katazome, mit der auf Okinawa Kimonos bedruckt werden. Später studierte er bei Yanagi Soetsu, einem wichtigen Vertreter der von sozialistischen Ideen beeinflussten japanischen Volkskunstbewegung, und bei Serizawa Keisuke. Dieser hatte Kappazuri, eine andere traditionelle Siebdrucktechnik so modifiziert, dass sie für Kunstdrucke auf Reispapier geeignet war. Unter dem Einfluss eines Lehrers konvertierte Watanabe zum Christentum und ließ sich 1930 taufen. Er erkrankte in jungen Jahren an Tuberkulose und gelobte, im Falle der Genesung die Bibel zu studieren und ihre Inhalte durch Kunstwerke zu verbreiten. So schuf er eine große Anzahl von Siebdrucken nach biblischen Themen, mit denen er nicht nur in Japan, sondern auch in der westlichen Welt zu großer Popularität gelangte. Seine Werke finden sich u. a. in den Sammlungen des Museums für japanische Volkskunst, des Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), des Carnegie Museum of Art, des British Museum und der Vatikanische Museen. Diese Ausgabe befindet sich in einem wirklich guten Zustand, mit dm Original-Schuber.
