First edition of Memoirs of the Reign of King Charles the First by Sir Philip Warwick in full calf binding.Together with a continuation of the happy restauration of King Charles II.Includes the title page from a very early edition in 1702.Illustrated with two engravings, as the frontispieces for each title page, of portraits of King Charles I and the author.Uncommon in this edition.Philip Warwick was a seventeenth century English writer and politician. He was a loyal supporter of Chalres II and was knighted and made a member of parliament. He is chiefly known for this work, written between 1675 and 1677.Prior owner's book plate to the first pastedown. From the library of Frederick Watson. Original panelled calf, with blindtooled inlays, and later gilt spine, with five raised bands. New gilt on black title label. Front cover and front free endpaper detached, but present. Armorial bookplate of John Sneyd of Biston Staffordshire. Supple, clean pages. spine and hinges tight. Philip Warwick (1609 - 1683) was educated at Eton. He travelled abroad for some time and in 1636 became secretary to the lord high treasurer, William Juxon. He fought at Edgehill and was one of the king's secretaries during the negotiations with the parliament at Hampton Court, and also during those at Newport, Charles speaking very highly of his services just before his execution. Remaining in England, Warwick was passively loyal to Charles II during the English Commonwealth period and enjoyed the confidence of the royalist leaders. In 1660 the king made him a knight, and in 1661 he became a member of parliament for Westminster and secretary to another Lord Treasurer, Lord Southampton, retaining this post until the treasury was put into commission on Southampton's death in May 1667. Warwick is chiefly known for his Memoirs of the Reigne of King Charles I, with a continuation to the happy restoration of King Charles II, written between 1675 and 1677, and published in London in 1701.
