Large stain to top text block edge, all edges tanning. Free endpapers starting to fox and tan; volume shaken and pages ageing. Otherwise, internally neat and clean. Frances Greville (nee Maynard), known as Daisy (1861-1938) , the Countess of Warwick, was an aristocratic socialite and philanthropist, mistress of several prominent men and, for a time, of the Prince of Wales, later Edward VII. Exposure of a love letter to the married Sir Charles Beresford scandalised; love letters to others were supressed, although published by her daughter after her death. In the late 1920s, facing imprisonment for debt, having mismanaged her fortune, she was released on the condition that if and when she published her memoirs, they be submitted first to a literary man. Her memoirs - entitled Ebb and Flow - were heavily censored but even so they shocked society and her daughter described them as 'muck' This collection of her essays was published shortly afterwards and offers further insights into Edwardian society and culture: it includes a damning chapter on 'The Marlborough Set' and reflects her nickname - The Red Countess.

Folio. 16 by 11 inches. pp 71, thick hand made paper style paper. {hotogravure frontis + 21 tissue guarded exquisite photogravure plates by Payne Jennings as called for, folio, original decorative brown cloth gilt floral decoration on cover, spine gilt lettered, top edge gilt, ownership signature "M. Kelway" at head of title page, presumably a member of the family of the long standing distinguished horticultural firm Kelway & Sons of Somerset. Slight rubbing, slight fading and a few faint marks to covers o/w very good with slight foxing to white borders of plates. Includes much on her famous Shakespeare Border. Aged 3, Frances Evelyn Maynard inherited enormous wealth on the deaths of her grandfather and father. Her early inheritance gave her an income of £30,000 a year and a large estate in Essex, centred on the Victorian mansion, Easton Lodge where, after her majority, she improved both the house and gardens. Marriage to Lord Brooke, (later Earl of Warwick) brought further wealth and also an estate at Warwick Castle. Lord and Lady Warwick, as members of the Marlborough Set, gave many house parties at Easton Lodge, and it was there that Daisy and the Prince of Wales conducted much of their love affair between the years 1888 to 1897. Daisy had other affairs, and she was nearly disgraced when incriminating letters became public and litigation followed. The first garden that Daisy designed were those at Stone Hall, a cruck cottage in the grounds of Easton Lodge, where a living sundial garden was built, with Shakespeare borders using the plants and flowers described in ShakespeareÕs works.
