Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Fair. First Edition. (no dust jacket) [a well-worn ex-rental library book (from The Good Fairy Shop in Vincennes, Indiana, with rubber stamps declaring that fact on both endpapers and pastedowns), descriptive text from the jacket flap flued to the front pastedown; external soiling, bumping/fraying at all corners, deterioration of cloth at top of spine, etc.; basically a reading copy only]. Per the jacket blurb, this is "the domestic drama, the very life struggle, of James Wesley Norton, an ordinary citizen of a modern American city. He is neither brilliant nor stupid, neither handsome nor ugly, neither a paragon of virtue nor the devil's own spawn." Unfortunately, though, he's apparently bedeviled by "the people whose conflicting currents ebb and flow around" him (his wife, his boss, his friend, some women, etc.), all adding up to "something maddened and inspired by the nightmare-like intensity of modern city life." The jacket blurb further declares it, quite optimistically, as "the greatest first novel to be published in years." At least one contemporary reviewer agreed, calling it "a vivid and powerful cross-section of life, written with a psychological accuracy that was amazing. It was life in the raw, characters skillfully welded into a pattern of memorable stark reality." As "Warren Spencer," the author appears to have written just one other novel, "Mad Melody," published the same year by the same publisher, and then one more as "William C. Lengel," entitled "Candles in the Wind," published in 1937.

Wind captures legendary players, including C. B. Macdonald, Bobby Jones, Byron Nelson, Babe Didrikson Zaharias, Ben Hogan, and Jack Nicklaus, in all their glory, and expertly analyzes the developments in style, equipment, and technique that created the modern game." ; "Originally released in 1948 and revised in 1956 and 1975, Wind's work is the most graceful and thorough history ever published of professional and amateur men's and women's golf in America. From John Reid, the man who introduced the game to this country with three holes carved out of a cow pasture on his New York estate in 1888, to Francis Ouimet's memorable victory in the 1913 U.S. Open, to Bobby Jones' "impregnable quadrilateral" in 1930, to the dawn of the era of Sam Snead, Byron Nelson, and Ben Hogan, Wind covers it all: the personalities, the competition, even swing analyses. This volume introduces the game's first star players, including Bobby Jones, Glenna Collett, Gene Sarazen, and Walter Hagen." ; "Encyclopedic in scope and intimate in detail, The Story of American Golf is both a fitting tribute to the beautiful and fickle game that inspired a national obsession and a testament to Herbert Warren Wind's incomparable talents as a journalist and historian. ; Contents: Sowing the seeds, 1883-1913 -- The apple tree gang -- Before and after St. Andrew's -- C. Allan, William; Roberts, David; Warren, Henry; Aubrey, C.E.; Harvey, William; Jonesm Owne, (Borders & Vignettes) (illustrator). Hard cover, with embossed, gilt detail and title to front board, and gilt detail to (tanned) spine. Remnant & Edmonds was a prominent 19th-century British bookbinding partnership, based in London, renowned for their "relievo" binding during the period 1846-1862, using a powerful embossing press to create the deep reliefs on leather, they were considered pioneers in Victorian cloth bindings, including intricate blind-stamped designs. Their discrete stamp in adhered to the foot of the rear pastedown. This volume is from the collection of Ian Angus, former librarian at King's College, London, and deputy librarian at University College, London, ownership pencilled to FEP, below a previous owner's penned name. General shelf and handling wear, including rubbing, fading and wear to boards, board edges and bumped corners, and tanning to spine. Pageblock head is gilded, tanning and foxing to face and foot, this leading into initial pages, the final few pages, to page edges and occasionally to the content. Light watermark noted to leading edge of the pageblock, this does not affect the text within, or distract from the exquisite decorations and borders surrounding this; very much on the edge of the leaf. Minor foxing to the main body of the content. Within, the leaves are firmly bound, and the illustrations and coloured embellisments are in beautiful condition; several have 'gilt' detail present, all colours vibrant and true. A fine volume for the age. Please contain us if additional images are required. CN.
