Zustand: Good. 4to Spiral bound. 40pp. + inserts. Silkscreen cover by Charles T. Coiner (1898-1989). In 1933 Coiner was asked to design a symbol for the National Recovery Administration, the federal agency created to encourage industrial recovery and combat unemployment. His Blue Eagle design, that he sketched on a flight to Was…hington, DC, was displayed by businesses all across the United States and as its much publicized creator, Coiner became something of a household name.Photograph by Ruth Bernhard. When Advertising Arts made its debut during the Great Depression, the economy was at its nadir and desperation was at its zenith. Unless advertising and public relations men like Calkins could help resuscitate the economy, the nation would plummet further into the abyss ? and with it the advertising industry. Advertising Arts, edited by Frederick C. Kendall and Ruth Fleischer, was developed as a vehicle to encourage innovative work and celebrate the determination of advertising designers to manipulate popular perception using pseudoscience. It was indeed a magazine with a mission. So rather than publish the usual diet of gossip, trade talk, and technical notices, Kendall and Fleischer tapped the movers and shakers of what was then called "art for industry" to flag the new progressivism. Touting their own achievements as "artists" and imbuing art with commercial value was a massive public relations effort that required the most articulate practitioners. Granted, the readers of Advertising Arts were primarily other advertising artists and designers, but nonetheless the magazine gained authority within the offices and boardrooms of industry. The articles validated contemporary design in ways that business men could understand it.Provenance : Estate of CCAC/CCA professor Steve Reoutt, who passed away May 14, 2008. He was born in 1938 in Shanghai to Russian parents. He came to the United States when he was just 12 years old. He went on to co-found the San Francisco chapter of the AIGA, including serving a nine-year board position as design historian. In 2001 Reoutt received the AIGA Fellowship award for "personal and professional contributions to raising the standards of excellence within our design community.".

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Folio (8 ½" x 11 ½"). Opens with an engraved portrait of Henry Ellis Beecher Stowe (eldest son Harriet Beecher Stowe, who drowned in the Connecticut River on July 9, 1857), followed by 35 oval salted paper print photographs by George K. Warren. All but two photographs are Signed or identified in ma…nuscript below the image. Each print mounted on the recto only of 34 card leaves within a manuscript ruled oval frame. Each image measures approximately 3 ½" x 4 ½". Bound in a later 19th century commercial album (patented 1877) in blind-stamped decorative cloth with an internal metal clasp fastener. The boards are rubbed and moderately soiled, the engraved plate of Stowe is foxed, a few intermittent leaves are toned, very good overall. One of the earliest college yearbook albums illustrated with original photographs, put together by an unidentified member of Dartmouth's class of 1859. Known for the "high quality and strength of his portraits" Warren is credited as the first photographer to specialize in graduating-class photography. He began "his long and prolific photographic career in 1851 in Lowell, Massachusetts, opening one of the city's first daguerreotype studios . When the portrait business in Lowell began to flag just prior to the Civil War, Warren turned to specializing exclusively in senior class photographs for colleges including Dartmouth, Princeton, Williams, Harvard, Brown, Yale, and Rutgers universities," and he kept a virtual monopoly on Ivy League and elite college yearbook photography for more than twelve years. The portraits in this album appear to be mostly of students, many of whom would go on to serve in the Civil War, including William Alfred Barnard (20th Michigan) who was captured in 1864 and survived seven months in a Confederate prison. Also included is George H. Strong, who moved to San Francisco where he joined the Bohemian Club and Astronomical Society of the Pacific, and served as President of the Dartmouth Alumni Association of the Pacific Coast. A scarce early album featuring many fine portraits by George Warren.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Quarto. Measuring 11" x 14". Bound in quarter black morocco and pebbled cloth over boards, gilt spine with raised bands, front cover lettered in gilt, all edges gilt. Compiled by Henry W. Tewksbury, a member of the graduating class, with his name stamped in gilt on the front cover and his bookplate… on the front pastedown. Contains 55 albumen prints neatly mounted on the rectos of 55 thick card leaves. Light wear at the edges of the boards, light toning, very good. An attractive Dartmouth College senior "class book" album with photographs most likely made by George K. Warren, credited as the first photographer to specialize in graduating-class photography. Known for the "high quality and strength of his portraits" Warren made all of the photographs for Dartmouth's first yearbook album in 1858 and thereafter kept a virtual monopoly on Ivy League and elite college yearbook photography for more than twelve years. Every yearbook is unique, having been compiled and bound for a particular graduating student. According to one of Warren's contemporary price lists, class portraits were 20 cents each, views and groups were 30 cents each. This album commissioned by Tewksbury contains 51 portraits of senior class members in alphabetical order (Abbott to Worcester, with each surname written in pencil at the bottom edge of the leaf); two campus views; one group portrait of 13 students, members of the Kappa Kappa Kappa fraternity; and one group portrait of the entire class of 1870. Laid in are five loose albumen portraits mounted on paper: Dartmouth Presidents Asa D. Smith and Samuel C. Bartlett; professors Edwin D. Sanborn and Henry E. Parker; and one unidentified student. There is also a later tintype portrait of a student laid in next to his albumen portrait; three loose pieces of printed ephemera: a printed1868 program: "Exercises at the Burial of Mathematics"; and two broadsheets relating to the 20th class anniversary. Tipped-in among the student portraits are 13 printed obituary notices dating through the 1890s. Henry Tewksbury, a successful lawyer and popular lecturer, suspended his practice in 1883 in order to tour the country. Severely injured in the 1887 West Hartford (Vermont) railway bridge disaster, Tewksbury recovered and was able to attend the class of 1870 20th anniversary celebration in 1890. Other notable figures pictured in the album include the remarkable character Theodore Barber, a university professor and book collector (and mentor to Andrew Mellon); and senior class President Francis Brown, a distinguished philologist and theologian, and Trustee of Dartmouth. A handsomely bound volume containing many fine portraits by or attributed to Warren.
