Remnant & Edmonds was a prominent 19th-century British bookbinding partnership, based in London, renowned for their "relievo" binding during the period 1846-1862, using a powerful emb…ossing press to create the deep reliefs on leather, they were considered pioneers in Victorian cloth bindings, including intricate blind-stamped designs. Their discrete stamp in adhered to the foot of the rear pastedown. This volume is from the collection of Ian Angus, former librarian at King's College, London, and deputy librarian at University College, London, ownership pencilled to FEP, below a previous owner's penned name. General shelf and handling wear, including rubbing, fading and wear to boards, board edges and bumped corners, and tanning to spine. Pageblock head is gilded, tanning and foxing to face and foot, this leading into initial pages, the final few pages, to page edges and occasionally to the content. Light watermark noted to leading edge of the pageblock, this does not affect the text within, or distract from the exquisite decorations and borders surrounding this; very much on the edge of the leaf. Minor foxing to the main body of the content. Within, the leaves are firmly bound, and the illustrations and coloured embellisments are in beautiful condition; several have 'gilt' detail present, all colours vibrant and true. Warrebn are reporting out the Harvard Medical School, Boston. "Another line of interest developed in the Harvard Laboratory was concerned with the nervous control of blood vessels. As early as 187…4, Bowditch and Minot published a paper showing that chloroform has a much more profound effect than ether in depressing vasomotor reflexes. Later Bowditch and Warren undertook an extensive investigation of the influence of different rates and strengths of peripheral stimulation on the contraction and relaxation of blood vessels. This study, which has received much attention, showed that by varying the nature of the stimuli it was possible to produce constriction, or constriction followed by dilation, or dilation alone-rapid stimulation favoring constriction and later dilation. This mode of separating vasoconstrictor and vasodilator effects was extended by means of experiments on degenerated nerves. It was ,found that whereas immediately after nerve section a given stimulus caused pure constriction, the same stimulus applied to a nerve which had been severed four days pre-viously induced a pure dilation. These results have suggestive values which have not yet been fully appreciated. Similar reversals of effect were reported by Bowditch in relation to etherization. Thus the glottis may be constricted or dilated according to the degree of ether-ization and the strength of the stimulus applied to the recurrent laryngeal nerve. Likewise in the frog extension of the leg and abduction of the toes, as a result of exciting the sciatic, will give place, under ether, to flexation and abduction." W.B.
