This inquiry was pursued by Mr Wardle, who served as a soldier in Sir William Watkins Wynn's Ancient British Regiment of light dragoons. He had a great interest in and wished to end corruption in the army. Wardle alleged that the mistress of Frederick, Duke of York, Mary Anne Clarke was promising promotions to officers in return for money. Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany was the then commander in chief of the Army. Wardle's continued pressing of his case led to the duke's resignation as commander-in-chief. Due to his parliamentary privilege Wardle was able to fight against the government's libel action against the press which was intended to prevent the accusations against the Duke from becoming public. An account of the court proceedings between G L Wardle and the Duke of York. Illustrated, with a frontispiece and twelve plates. Collated, complete. This report is an account of the proceedings upon the charges against Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany by Gwllym Lloyd Wardle. Wardle was an army officer serving as a soldier in Sir William Watkins Wynn's Ancient British Regiment of light dragoons. He then was elected MP of Okehampton in 1807. During his time as an MP, Wardle developed an interest in corruption in the army. He alleged that Prince Frederick's mistress, Mary Anne Clarke, was promising promotion to officers in return for money. Wardle pursued a legal case against the Duke of York and secured his resignation as commander-in-chief. Following this resignation it emerged that Wardle had negotiated with Clarke regarding Prince Frederick before his parliamentary attack and that her testimony was bought. It transpired in 1810 that the whole affair was a conspiracy organised by the duke of Kent, with Wardle in his confidence (ODNB). This work is the court proceedings from 1809, which lead to the resignation of Prince Frederick. Containing testimonies and speeches verbatim. The illustrations are portraits of those who testified in the case against the Duke of York. An important account of this noted Georgian scandal. In a contemporary calf binding. Revised edition in quarter leather backed spine and pebbled brown cloth sides. Shallow loss to leather at crown and a short open chip over the front joint. Prior ownership in pencil at front of young Susie Wardle, 212 Mantonga [? ] St. Pottsville, PA. Below the ownership she has written the same word three times in pencil - could be "russian" but might be "ruffian." On the rear endpage pastedown in what appears to be the same hand Miss Susan Wardle has sketched out plans to leave for the big city (philadelphia) on Christmas day: "Miss Alice / is very cross to me and I am / going to leave school on christmas / and go to the City to school / for miss Alice is to cross / and I hope that I will get a / kinder teacher and if my teacher / is kind to me I will do good / and learn my lessons well and not [illegible]." While it can't be known if Miss Alice called young Susie Wardle a ruffian, we do know that Susie was born in 1858 in Pottsville and married 1872 in that town at the tender age of 14 to the ambitious Hat merchant, John H. Williams. The front free endpage has been torn away, perhaps upon which were recorded some other best removed opinions of Miss Alice. The last leaf of the index and rear blank endpage also torn away, perhaps to start a fire on the cold Christmas day walk to the big city. Text has scattered light toning and spotting and evidence of reading and use. Leather rubbed and scuffed over joints but though a little tender still sound. Good only but with some unusual and striking manuscript sentiments.…
