The letter must have been written in 1855, as Fox Maule (later Earl of Dalhousie) was appointed Secretary of State for War on 8 February of that year, and Napier died on 16 September. 4pp, 16mo. Bifolium with black border. Loss to part of second leaf caused by removal from mount, resulting in loss of a few words of text, otherwi…se in good condition. Begins: 'In consequence of a letter from my Son William of your regt. [i.e. the King's Own Scottish Borderers] stating your wish to be appointed a Paymaster to the Out Pensioners, I wrote to my friend Mr Fox Maule the Secy. at War, & herewith give you the answer which I am sorry to say holds out but little prospect of success'. He proceeds to transcribe Fox Maule's letter, dated 'War Office | 8th. July', adding: 'You had better not depend much upon this, but use all other interest you may have in that quarter, as the more Irons [y]ou have in the fire the [bette]r!' He concludes 'Lady Napier [jo]ins me in best compliments to Mrs. Hamilton'. In a postscript he asks for Hamilton to give the Napiers' best regards to a 'friend', whose name has been torn away, 'at Chatham'. Napier's son Major-General William Craig Emilius Napier (1818-1903) would end his career as Governor of the Royal Military College at Sandhurst.

One of the great figures in world history. See his entries in Encyclopaedia Britannica and the Oxford DNB. On one side of piece of laid paper rougly 11 cm squarer, with partial watermark 'J G'. In fair condition, lightly aged and creased, with traces of mount on blank reverse. Folded twice. Reads: 'London March 7 1842 / F M The…Duke of Wellington presents his Compliments to Miss Busby / Not being resident at Oxford he has no Controul [sic] over any matter relating to the Bodleian Library. / Miss Busby should apply to the Vice Chancellor. -' The identity of the actual writer of the letter has been questioned in pencil at the foot of page with 'Qy Secy' (i.e. 'Query? Secretary'), and the doubt does not seem unjustified. It may well be that this item is in the Duke's hand - the writing certainly has his characteristic slope - but although it is superficially similar, there are several elements in the calligraphy that raise a strong doubt: the 'L' and 'M' of the date 'London March'; all four initials in 'F M The Duke', the fact that the second 'l' in 'Wellington' is looped, and in particular the fact that the 'r' in 'resident' and 'n' in 'no' begin below the line of writing, which is not a characteristic observed in the Duke's writing at any period. The letter - written with energy and some resentment - refers to Admiral Sir William Parker (1781-1866), who was made a Knight Co…mmander of the Order of the Bath in 1815. It is headed 'Private & Confidential' and begins: 'My dear Macdonald | In reflection I decided not to ask for the rank you suggested, because I thought it might be considered a personal favor, & not an act which conferred personal dignity on one of the King's Agents, & I detest asking for favors, especially from persons unwilling to grant them.' He continues: 'Lord Palmeston ought to see & judge himself whether or not the public service is benefitted by such rank being conferred, my own belief is that when An Agent goes amongst these Military Nations, where Military rank is alone considered, the higher the rank of the Agent the easier he can do his duty.' Nevertheless Napier will not ask, '& without asking nothing is given in England'. He continues: 'I think I was ill used in not having the 2d Order of the Bath given to me when it was given to Adl. Parker. We were colleagues on the same station, he a New Admiral, I a Brigadier General with fuller powers than he had, for when two Ministers like Asses sent our fleet to Sea where it remained at a great expense (from near 2 [?]) to the Nation I alone had the Power to call it into the Tagus, & did call it into the Tagus, on my own responsiblity, which act was approved of by the Ministry. However they gave Parker the Bath & not me, but I certainly shall not ask for it. Nor have I ever, nor shall I ever complain of not having it, & say to to you & to you alone in strict Confidence'.

In fair condition, lightly aged, with slight creasing at head. Reads: 'Sir George Murray has to…acknowledge the receipt of Mr. Wrights letter of the 4th. Instant, and in compliance with the request expressed in it, he encloses a Copy of his speech on the Catholic Relief Bill, as published in a reported form by the Proprietors of the Review of Parliament, and which he believes to be correct.' A supporter of Catholic emancipation, Murray was Colonial Secretary in Wellington's administration, and left office on its fall in November 1830.

Four interesting Peninsular War items, from a collection of Beresford material. In 1813 the Duke of Wellington described Beresford as 'the ablest man I have yet seen in the army'. See his entry in the Oxford DNB. The four items are in good condition, lightly aged and worn (but see descriptions of Items One and Three), and folded… for postage. ONE: Apparent Autograph Draft of Letter. 'Abranles July 4. 1809'. 2pp, 4to. On laid Whatman paper. Reverse somewhat grubby with glue stains (from display in an album?) at foot of reverse of leaf. Written in a hurried hand, similar to other examples consulted (for example in 'd' shapes, ampersand, use of long s and spelling 'untill'), and with one emendation supporting the idea that the item is a draft and not a copy ('he does not intend further' is altered to 'he does not intend drawing further upon me'), as does the fact that the text ends abruptly mid-page. Whether in his hand or not, clearly written by Beresford, during the build up to the Battle of Talavera. Reads: 'Sir / You will be pleased to remain here with Mr Posleton, Clerk, for the purpose of paying the Checks which the Commissary General or any Person authorised by him may draw upon me - which you will pay from the money I shall leave in your hands & when you can ascertain from the Commissary General that he does not intend drawing further upon me I wish you to follow me as quickly as possible by the enclosed route - I have already made a requisition from Mr Asst. Comy Ogilvie (in charge of the Car & Mule department) for twenty-seven ox or mule cars but I understand from him that there are none of either description at present[.] You will therefore request the requisition in writing for whatever number you may want to bring forward the Military Chest untill you receive them - you will be guided in your departure from here by the Commissary Generals departure to whom you will apply on this Head. / I wish you to assist Mr Asst. Stuart / His Majestys Envoy / Lisbon'. A vivid and substantial historical document. Of his activities around this time the Oxford DNB writes: 'In the summer of 1…810, in command of a squadron on the coast of Spain, Mends destroyed several French batteries, for which service, in addition to a formal letter of thanks from the junta of Galicia, he received the order of the Cross of Victory of the Asturias and the nominal rank of major-general of the Spanish army.' He begins by osberving that the 'Correspondence with Biscay has been kept so profoundly abstracted' from his knowledge, that he really knows 'nothing of the matter, beyond having directed every Ship on the Station to attend to it, in preference to every other object. ie to receive on board any Agent who might present himself as so employ'd'. He continues with reference to 'the mode of carrying on this correspondence', 'the Deputy Commissary Mr. White', 'Arana', 'the Blockaded Ports', 'the Nimrod cutter', 'the House of Mr. Dickinson', 'Don Raymond de Castro the late Captain General of Galicia', 'the Ifegena', 'Santona', 'General Renovales'. He concludes: 'I am now getting under weigh for Bermio [sic] with a large Quantity of Ammunition on board for Biscay & Navarra, and shall immediately return here to conduct the Expedition which I make no doubt will succeed in a very extensive degree - God grant that we may receive such accounts from your side of the Country as we hope soon to send from this'.

An outstanding series of 37 vivid, candid letters by Major-General Sir George Ridout Bingham (1777-1833), transcribed by him from his original correspondence home and spanning April 1809 to January 1814, including the campaign of Talavera. They constitute a major primary source for campaigning in the Peninsula. In a reflective f…oreword, written at Dean's Leaze in 1820-21, Bingham explains that he found his mother's preserved cache of letters on his return to England and copied them out verbatim, omitting only personal matters. He stresses that he made no revisions, leaving his early impressions, misjudged predictions, and evolving opinions intact, and notes the gradual growth of his confidence in Wellington. An index closes the volume. A letter of 29 July 1809 from the field near Talavera captures the collection's immediacy: Bingham reports the ferocity of the action, the heavy British casualties borne without Spanish support, the army's acute want of provisions, the deaths and wounds among senior officers, his own collapse from exhaustion, and the Spaniards' killing of wounded Frenchmen. Such unvarnished observations typify the set. The foreword and letters are printed in Gareth Glover's Wellington's Lieutenant, Napoleon's Gaoler (2005). Glover notes that all surviving transcripts - including those at the National Army Museum, typescript copies presented to the United Services Institute in 1923 - derive from lost originals. He characterizes the letters as frank, immediate, and rich in operational detail, free from retrospective shaping and attentive to landscape, people, officers, daily routines, and the brutal conduct of war. Bingham, from a long-established Dorset family, rose rapidly: ensign in the 69th (1793), major in the 82nd (1801), and in 1805 lieutenant-colonel of the newly raised 2/53rd. He led the battalion throughout its distinguished Peninsula service (Porto to Burgos), later commanding a provisional battalion through Vitoria, the Pyrenees, and the Nivelle. Decorated with the Portuguese Order of the Tower and Sword and made KCB, he escorted Napoleon to St Helena and commanded there until 1819, later serving on the Irish staff during a turbulent period. He was widely regarded as a considerate and able officer. Provenance: pencilled ownership of Col. John Delalynde Mansel (1850-1915), Rifle Brigade, whose grandfather, Lieut.-Col. John Mansel, served as Bingham's second-in-command in the Peninsula. Subsequent family marriages united the Mansel, Bingham, and Pleydell lines. Binding professionally refurbished, slight cockling to first few leaves, otherwise clean and presenting smartly.

A scarce Peninsular War-era map, nicely engraved by John Stephenson (fl. 1790-1836), a veteran of the nautical chart trade, and cannily utilising the name of the leading Spanish cartographer of the day, Vicente Tofiño. An online institutional search shows five copies only: British Library, Oxford, Cornell, Stanford, and Chicago.… Tofiño produced two excellent atlases covering the Iberian littoral, the Derrotero de las costas de España and Atlas Maritimo, both published in 1789. A reduced quarto edition of the former was published in 1812 by William Faden, the king's geographer, as Espana Maritima, or Spanish Coasting Pilot, and served as the standard onboard rutter for Royal Navy officers. Hand-coloured engraved map (630 x 810 mm), linen backed, dissected into 20 sections, folding down into the original case (210 x 135 mm), Spatter pattern marbled paper, circular printed label to front, priced in a contemporary hand at 12 shillings. Some old stains to verso, just showing through in places on the map; a little wear to case, yet overall a very good, bright example.
