No Binding. Zustand: Very Good. A set of four rare contemporary British War Artist postcards. All very good, postally unused, gently rubbed to the corners, tanning, with some marks to the backs. These are products of the War Artists' Advisory Committee's British War Advisory Scheme, initiated and run for the Ministry of Information by the National Gallery's Director Kenneth Clark. They were issued alongside related exhibitions, and two series of "War Pictures by British Artists" books. By the time the WAAC was dissolved in December 1945, it had commissioned over 5,000 works by over four hundred artists. Included here: (1) Feliks Topolksi, "Home Guards against Canadians, Summer 1941 - City of London Invasion Trial" for the British War Artists Exhibition, 149x106mm, original b/w with divided back, printed by B. Matthews (Photo Printers), London. A home front scene, painted and exhibited in 1941. Topolski was an official war artist for both Britain and Poland. // (2) Edward Bawden, "Gallabat - Guns Firing on Metemma", 147x112mm, colour with undivided back, printed by Harrison & Sons, London. Undated, but painted in 1940 while Bawden was attached to Wingate's mission against the Italians, showing action on the Sudan-Abyssinia border (Tate). // (3) Edward Ardizzone, "Basement Ward, Royal Hospital", 156x111mm, colour with undivided back, printed by Harrison & Sons, London. Portfolio of 47 auto-lithograph prints in original cloth backed board case. A collection of 47 lithographed illustrations executed by some of America's best illustrsators exclusively for thei collection benefiting American Artist Soldiers and their families - who from causes of the war may need assistance. Injured, maimed or their families. A very uncommon collection of unique images. This example has a complete collection of the auto-litho prints by artists including Maxfield Parrish, Charles Gibson, Cecilia Beaux, Childe Hassam, William H. Lippincott, Will H. Low, Ivan G. Olinsky, Violet Oakley, Joseph Pennell and others. This portfolio was in the special collections of a University Library. Each leaf has the library's small circular ink stamp to the blank verso of the leaf. The heavt card stock boards are chipped, worn and stressed at the edges. Some 10 or 12 paltes are nicked or creased in the blank margins. A pictorial plate mounted (as issued) to the front board is chipped and missing a significant section along the spine edge of the image. Worn and lightly damaged case with complete set of plates.
