He served as a *lianhuanhua* artist for the Shanghai Xinhua Art Publishing House and the Shanghai People's Fine Arts Publishing House, and was acclaimed as one of the "Four Great Masters" of the Shanghai *lianhuanhua* scene in the 1940s. ; Chao Hung-pen (???, 1915-2000) was a prominent Chinese artist and master of lianhuanhua (palm-sized Chinese picture storybooks / sequential comic books). He is widely celebrated as one of the "Four Great Pillars" of the Shanghai lianhuanhua community, playing a foundational role in shaping modern Chinese comic art.
