Hardcover. 2nd printing. xxiv, 574 p.; 21.5 cm. The main chapters 1-80 are condensed to 53, the continuation to 54-60, with glossary. [First thus 1958] From Chi-chen Wang's introduction: There are two distinct literary traditions in China. One derives its inspiration from the Confucian classics and other ancient works, and was created by the literocrats for their own edification and amusement. The other evolved from the oral tradition and was created by the lowly minstrel and storyteller. The first is written in Ku Wen or the classical language; the second, in Pai Hua or the colloquial style. The novel belongs to the second tradition and was not considered as literature at all until quite recently. (xii) -- Tsao Hsueh-chin was of Chinese blood but was born a Bannerman, a term applied to persons who owed hereditary military service to the Manchus. We know definitely that he died on February 1, 1764, but the date of his birth can only be surmised and placed about 1724. (xiv) -- Tsao Hsueh-chin left 80 chapters of his novel in more or less finished form before his death. Copies of these 80 chapters were made and commented upon by a "Chih Yen Chai," who, Mr. Chou suggests, was probably the author's "new wife" or River Mist (Shih Hsiang-yun) of the novel. Two dated [ms] copies of the Chih Yen Chai version have come down to us. [1754 and 1760]. In the meantime, a 120-chapter version of the novel had appeared in 1792. .the last 40 chapters are poorly written and that it is like "dog's tail sewed unto sable." (xvi f.) -- In general, I have omitted nothing from the first 80 chapters which I consider significant. The exceptions are incidents which would be meaningful only if followed up later on.
