As attitudes towards the canon have altered over the last decade, textual scholarship too has changed, both in practice and theory. The essays in this collection examine the connections between textual scholarship and the canon, and the implications for textual scholarship of changing attitudes to the canon within the wider academic environment. As is now characteristic of Variants, essays range widely over time and space in their focus, reflecting the breadth of the Society's membership and interests. Two essays focus on different aspects of the distinctive Lithuanian experience of the canon. Other essays trace the influence of the concept in Sweden, the problematic nature of the canon when dealing with unstable medieval texts, the debate within the German scholarly community about modes of editing, developments in the canon outside the academic world in the last decades, and an account of the problems of editing a very non-canonical text. An exhaustive collection of twenty-three of the Collins illustrated pocket edition of the works of Sir Walter Scott. An eminent writer and historian, Scott remains a leading figure in Scottish history, best known for his "Waverly" novels and impressive narrative poems, such as Marmion and The Lady of the Lake. Uniformly bound in the publisher's original maroon leatherette soft covers. The Abbot features a colour postcard tipped in to page 266; The Betrothed features the frontispiece and first two pages of the John S. Brown and Sons Canadian edition of the Holy Bible, folded in two and heavily discoloured and spotted, tipped in to the front of the work; Peveril of the Peak contains an advertisement for the Glasgow-based wholesale musicseller Frank Simpson to page 210. Externally, lovely condition with only minor bumping and rubbing. Light fading along some of the spines, especially to Castle Dangerous and The Bride of Lammermoor. A few marks can be seen across the collection, more prominent to the rear of Rob Roy. Peak and Peveril features slightly heavier loss of cloth along the rear joint, reinforced with tape. Internally, firmly bound. The frontispiece and title page of The Antiquary and Woodstock remain unopened, as does page 386 to The Antiquary.
