4° (25,5 x 19 cm.). 320 S. mit 16 Farbtafeln und zahlr. (16 ganzs.) Illustrationen. Orig.-Leinenband mit goldgepr. Rücken- und Deckeltitel, goldgepr. Rücken- und Deckel-Illustration und Goldschnitt. Erste Ausgabe. First edition. The English watercolourist and book illustrator Charles Robinson (18701937) became known for his illustrations for Robert Louis Stevenson's *A Child's Garden of Verses* (1895); the collection of poems published ten years earlier (under the title *Penny Whistles*) only achieved success with Robinson's illustrations. "He also illustrated new editions of, among others, Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and the Brothers Grimm's fairy tales. . Charles Robinson's work was influenced by contemporary art movements such as Pre-Raphaelite and Art Nouveau. It comprises over 700 images and is highly multifaceted due to the fusion of various styles. Whilst his engravings are reminiscent of the woodcuts of old masters such as Albrecht Dürer, his colour lithographs were influenced by Japanese art. In addition, there are several watercolour paintings in the style of Aubrey Beardsley. 'Robinson's colour lithographs in particular are characterised by a quite unmistakable style. Despite sharp contours, the colouring here is not flat, but varies within the areas defined by the contours, which is more typical of Japanese painting' (Wikipedia). - Joints on the capital restored, a good, clean copy.
