In den WarenkorbGood orig. gray boards in torn lavender dj. xiv, 296 p.; front. (4 examples of script and Locatelli arms) and 29 pl., fold. tour map, map of Northern Italy on eps; 22 cm. "The Quinze-Vingts Hospital, founded by St. Louis for three hundred Christians blinded by the Saracens, occupied at that time a large area of ground to the south of the Palais Royal. The church attached to the hospital, though richly endowed with privileges and indulgences, was unbelievably sordid, thought Sebastiano. `God knows how dirty the priestly vestments are. Amices, surplices and purificators are absolutely filthy; the chasubles are almost in tatters; the birettas have lost their shape and are thick with grease. I didn't know about this squalor when I contracted with the hostess of our inn to say twenty Masses there for a gold louis; afterwards I wouldn't have accepted the commission for a pistole a Mass.' There was no server, no light beyond that from a yellow half-farthing candle. `So as not to be caught in complete darkness in the middle Mass, one had to get through it at top speed. This was the regular practice; it brought the Church into disrepute, and gave heretics a chance to jeer. If I weren't restrained by a sense of decency, I would say that inn tables are more nicely kept than the altars in this church.'" (p. 150 f.). Binding is Hardcover.…

In den WarenkorbSee his entries in the Oxford DNB and Australian Dictionary of Biography. The recipient George Kenneth Menzies (1869-1954) was Secretary to the Royal Society of Arts between 1917 and 1935. The nine items are in good condition, lightly aged, and are folded for postage. Each bears the stamp of the RSA, some with manuscript docketting. Letters of 4 April and 18 September 1925 are in autograph, the rest typed; all nine are signed 'Walter Rosesnhain'. A letter of 1 October 1924 responds to a request for information about zirconium, with reference to the 'literature' on the subject and British and American firms 'interested in Zirconium products'. The rest of the correspondence is taken up with lecturing. The first item (ANS, 2 February 1915) is a covering note for 'the synopsis of my forthcoming course of Cantor Lectures'. On 13 September 1924 Rosenhaim writes that he could 'quite well give either one lecture or a course of three during the coming Autumn and Winter. The subject I habe in mind is the Inner Structure of Alloys, on which I gave a Royal Institution Friday lecture last year. While it is possible to deal with the subject in a single lecture, it would be much more satisfactory to give a course of three lectures upon it. The subject really relates to the X-ray study of crystal structures and its application to metallurgical problems and consitutes, I think, perhaps the most important metallurgical advance which has been achieved recently.' He asks for a quick response, as his 'Winter engagements have a way of piling up during the year'. On 4 April 1925 he states that he has 'mentioned the matter of Cantor lectures to one or two of my colleagues & I think either Mr. Higgins or one of the others might give a course on such a subject as "Thermometers" or possibly "High Vacua', but before approaching them he would like to clarify the question of a fee. 'I am also interested in the matter because, although about a month has now elapsed since my recent course was finished, I have received no fee & I am wondering whether a letter may have gone astray.' The matter is presumably resolved, as a few weeks later, on 30 April 1925, he sends (not present) 'a memorandum on the subject of a course to be entitled "Thermometry" by Mr W. F. Higgins of this Laboratory', and mentions that '[t]here is also a possible suggestion of a course entitled "The Production and Measurement of High Vacua" with experimental demonstrations by Dr G. W. C. Kaye', both of which courses he thinks 'would be very satisfactory for your Society but that of Dr Kaye would be particularly interesting and would, I think, attract a considerable audience as the whole problem of high vacua is becoming of every [sic] increasing importance in connexion with electric lamps and radio valves'. On 8 January 1926 he wonders whether Higgins's communication with Menzies regarding a proposed lecture has also 'gone astray', and agrees to review 'Sir Robert Hadfield's book on Metallurgy' for the RSA journal, 'provided that the review may be anonymous. I very much object to writing signed reviews'. On 11 February 1926 he asks for an offprint of a lecture by Sir Richard Paget: 'I may be able to obtain a copy by asking Sir Richard Paget himself, but I would prefer not to trouble him if it can be got from you.'.…

He would not 'give any extravagant price' for the 'dull performance' of Walter Hilton [one of Wynkyn de Worde's editions of Hilton's 'Scale of Perfection'], 'but he is interesting, as I believe him to have been a Northern man. Walter de Helton was concerned in Appleby lands in 36 Edw. III. and Walter de Hilton was Rector of Moreby in 1369, and had a brother Wm. (of Burton near Appleby?).' Longstaffe states that a printed translation 'sells as a print, but the colophon will always be amusing'. He suspects that 'the mss. are more commonplace than the prints'. 'Raine has a beautiful one, formerly Greenwell's, or vice versa'. if he was 'a Bishop' he would give '£210 of yellow metal' for Ellis & White's 'curious' copy. 'We numismatists hardly consider, as to light & shade, the yellow metal equal to the white'. He concludes: 'All of which, being gravely considered, proveth XtO to be a very queer fellow.' In den WarenkorbFrom the papers of W. J. Macqueen-Pope (see his entry in the Oxford DNB). Addressed in autograph to MP care of the BBC, and then forwarded to his office, 359 Strand. Pencil annotation by MP. On one side of an unillustrated postmarked printed British 'Indian Postage' air mail card with Indian postage stamp. In good condition, aged and lightly-worn. Also in Singh's autograph is the salutation to 'Dear Pope' and the valediction 'Your sincere / St Nihal Singh ST NIHAL SINGH'. He is addressing MP 'informally in the belief that you are an old - and esteemed - acquaintance who in the years of my London journalism, gave his working hours to Rothermere Press and his leisure to Shakespeare and used to give me the pleasure of his company now and again'. He continues: 'SHOULD it be a case of mistaken identity (a phrase that must have often leant from your lips), let me hasten to ensure you that your broadcasts invariably delight us. You often speak of players whom we knew -- some of them in private life as well as on the stage. Your voice as we receive it is clear and pleasant.' Carbon copy of MP's typed reply, 9 November 1951: 1p, 4to. Aged and worn, with creasing and wear at foot, but no loss of text. He believes that Singh has him mixed up with 'T. Michael Pope, who was a journalist and a friend of mine although no relation. I have always worked in the theatre, although for many years now my job therein has been a combination of management and publicity which always brought me into the closest contact with Fleet Street, and I feel sure we met.' Singh's postacard has given him 'great joy. Nowadays I write many books all on the subject of the Theatre. I don't know whether they ever get to India but if they do, I am sure you would like them.'.…

Text washed and pressed (but, except for the first and last few leaves, without the typical resultant darkening and fading), otherwise an extremely attractive copy still fresh, the margins especially wide, and the binding lustrous and scarcely worn. First issued in Latin in the same year as our edition, this is the major work of English puritan Walter Travers (1548? - 1625), applying the Calvinist presbyterian system of ecclesiastical government to the episcopal Church of England. According to DNB, for Calvin and Travers alike, "the duty of the theologian was merely to identify [the church's] structure and apply it to contemporary circumstances. It was in this last respect that Travers's originality lay, for he subtly adapted Calvin's biblical model to an English context. In order to undermine the diocesan episcopate of the English church, Travers started off with an examination of the role of bishops in the New Testament, showing that they were not part of a separate hierarchy with authority over other clergy, but merely ministers of local congregations. He also differed from Calvin in identifying elders as a type of deacon, rather than a separate kind of minister." Our book was written during Travers' 1570-76 sojourn in Geneva, where he became a friend of Calvin's successor, Theodore Beza. Afterwards, he ministered to English merchant marines in Antwerp, where he refused to use the Book of Common Prayer for worship. Despite this, when Travers returned to England, he became chaplain to Elizabeth's chief minister, William Cecil, and tutor to his son. As DNB notes, "his close ties to influential courtiers of a Calvinist inclination" would be key to Travers' career, keeping him out of serious trouble despite his strongly presbyterian views.
