In 1922 he received his M.D. degree in Freiberg, Germany. Upon persuasion of Dr. Max Bahr, he came to Indianapolis in 1924 and worked as a research pathologist at Central State Hospital. From 1924-67 he was a member of the Department of Neurology at Indiana University School of Medicine where he was ultimately promoted to full professor. Dr. Bruetsch introduced the use of malarial treatment, first discovered by Dr. Wagner-Jauregg, to individuals suffering from cerebral syphilis. Dr. Bruetsch also introduced the use of electroconvulsive therapy for schizophrenia at Central State Hospital. After retiring.
