Estos relatos tienen como protagonistas a adolescentes irlandeses huérfanos recluidos en un intern…ado, que se muestra a los ojos del lector como un universo cerrado, con leyes propias. Frente a este espacio aislado aparece el distante mundo de la Iglesia, encarnado por los religiosos del colegio, las damas irlandesas de la sociedad benefactora y la familia de los internos, siempre lejana y casi irrecuperable. Para ser integrante de ese rebaño es necesario pasar el rito de iniciación. Ése es el tema central de «Irlandeses detrás de un gato», en el que se encuentran todos los elementos que irán evolucionando en los dos relatos siguientes. Así, en «Los oficios terrestres» se desarrolla ampliamente la oposición entre la vida dentro y fuera del internado, mientras que «Un oscuro día de justicia» nos muestra que no hay justicia posible para los desfavorecidos. Rodolfo Walsh , descendiente de irlandeses, nació en 1927 en Choele Choel, provincia de Río Negro, Argentina. Diez años más tarde, fue internado en un colegio irlandés para pobres en la localidad de Capilla del Señor. Ejerció de lector, corrector y traductor en la editorial Hachette desde 1944 hasta 1951, año en que inició su andadura como periodista en las publicaciones Leoplán y Vea y Lea. Su obra cultiva sobre todo el género policial, el periodístico y el testimonial, con títulos como Operación Masacre (1957) y ¿Quién mató a Rosendo? (1969). En la mayoría de sus obras se advierte un interés común por la denuncia social y la investigación de casos escandalosos y criminales de la vida política y sindical de su país. En marzo de 1977 las fuerzas armadas del régimen militar de Jorge Rafael Videla organizaron una emboscada en las calles de Buenos Aires con el objetivo de capturarlo vivo. Sin embargo, Walsh, militante revolucionario, se resistió y fue herido de muerte. Su cuerpo nunca apareció.
