In den WarenkorbVery scarce first edition, the Evreux issue; it was also issued with a Paris imprint. This is the first and principal work of Auguste Walras (1801-1866) and proved a major influence on his son Léon's marginal utility theory. Included with this copy is the 12-page announcement of the work from the Revue normande. The work is chiefly concerned with a study of value and is perhaps the first long treatise published on the subject (Howey, p. 29). Walras opposed the two existing schools of thought on value: the French writers who based it on utility and the English economists who tended towards a labour or cost-of-production theory. Instead, he determined the value of goods by assessing their scarcity in relation to human desires, a concept he called raretè and returned to many times during his career. "There are many passages in his writings in which he appears to be on the point of enunciating in precise language the more correct views that are now associated with the names of his son Léon Walras and Jevons. but a perusal of his earliest book is quite sufficient to show that he was a man of great originality of thought" (Palgrave III, p. 652). Einaudi 5960 (Paris imprint); Goldsmiths' 26693 (Evreux); Kress C.2997 (Paris); Mattioli 3793 (Evreux). Richard S. Howey, The Rise of the Marginal Utility School, 1989. Octavo (222 x 140 mm), pp. [iv], xxiv, 334. [2, errata]. Original stiff paper wrappers printed in black. Housed in a custom made cloth box. Spine professionally restored. Gift inscription "Monsieur Bordeaux" to head of front wrapper; a very good copy, crisp and clean, uncut and unopened.

In den WarenkorbRe-issue of the first edition sheets, first issued in Evreux and Paris in 1831, here with a new date and imprint on the front wrapper and title page. The work is chiefly concerned with a study of value and is perhaps the first long treatise published on the subject (Howey, p. 29). Einaudi 5960; Goldsmiths' 26693; Kress C.2997; Mattioli 3793 (all for 1831 issue). Richard S. Howey, The Rise of the Marginal Utility School, 1989. Octavo (218 x 132 mm). Twentieth-century half vellum, red morocco label, marbled sides. Original wrappers bound in. Lengthy closed tears repaired to pp. vii/viii, xi/xii, & 41/42, all into text without loss, upper outer corner of pp. ix/ix restored (not affecting text), chip to pp. 1/2 adhered to following page slightly obscuring text. Despite these early faults, contents otherwise clean: a very good, wide-margined copy.

In den WarenkorbFirst edition, in the original wrappers and rare thus, of this important treatise by the elder Walras, of enduring influence through its significant impact on the writings and economic thought of Léon, his more famous son. "Many of Léon Walras's categories and definitions of factors of production were copied almost verbatim from his father's book, Theorie de la richesse sociale, published in 1849. Certainly, the more refined definitions borrowed from his father enabled Leon Walras to develop a theory of production of remarkable clarity and logical consistency" (Jaffé, p. 20). Cossa 272 (83); Einaudi 5974. William Jaffé, Essays on Walras, 1983. Duodecimo. Uncut in original yellow wrappers, printed in black. Wrappers worn and soiled, joints split with covers loosening, foxing. A sound copy.

In den WarenkorbFirst edition. The Théorie de la Richesse is important for the influence it had on Auguste's son Léon; it is from this work that Leon derived his conceptual arrangement of capitaux as "all 'goods' that serve more often than once and, in a narrower sense, as durable goods that are themselves produced (capitaux proprement dits). Their services he called revenus, no matter whether they are consumed by the owner (e.g. as leisure in the case of 'personal' capital: this leisure is still travail) or used productively" (Schumpeter p. 999). Cossa 272 (83); Einaudi 5974. Joseph Alois Schumpeter, History of Economic Analysis, 1954. Duodecimo (184 x 113 mm). Recent brown cloth, red sheep label, fore and bottom edges uncut. Complete with contents and advertisement leaves at rear. Label a little rubbed, binding holding firm, contents somewhat toned and foxes as usual, faint running dampstain at head of gutter from p. 47 to end, minor ink marks to pp. 48, 49, and 68, slight paper adhesion to p. 97. A very good copy.
