Pub Year 1990, See images for condition. About the book >.>.> For the third exhibition at the Walpole Gallery, a curated anthology of Venetian Baroque and Rococo painting has been assembled, showcasing the rich artistic heritage of the eighteenth century while also including a select group of works from the seventeenth century. These earlier pieces serve to highlight the artistic tendencies that would gain further prominence in the subsequent century. This exhibition has been in planning since the gallery's inauguration, allowing ample time for the careful selection and research of the featured artworks. The focus on Venetian art is particularly fitting for the Walpole Gallery, which is dedicated to Italian art, as Venetian culture significantly influenced English taste and thought during the eighteenth century. The exhibition is enhanced through the inclusion of notable loans, such as the celebrated pastel of Horace Walpole by Rosalba Carriera, graciously lent by Lord and Lady Walpole. Additionally, two paintings from the Castle Howard collection are included through the generosity of Mr and Mrs Simon Howard. The success of this venture has been facilitated by the support of various art historians and patrons, including Dr. Prisco Bagni, Dr. Edi Baccheschi, Dr. Francesca Boris, Prof. Rosanna Bossaglia, Prof. Giuliano Briganti, Viscount Coke, Mr Lance Entwhistle, Mr Christopher Gatiss, and Dr. Lilli Ghio. This anthology not only serves as a visual feast for art enthusiasts but also provides valuable insights into the stylistic developments prevalent in Venetian Baroque and Rococo paintings, contributing to a deeper understanding of this influential period in art history.

Pub Year 1988, See images for condition. About the book >.>.> This exhibition catalogue, Treasures of Italian Art, showcases the inaugural collection at the Walpole Gallery, presenting a diverse anthology that accentuates the gallery?s future offerings. While subsequent exhibitions will centre on specific themes, this compilation reflects a unified Italian origin in the featured artworks. Among the highlights are an exceptional array of Mannerist paintings focused on Giorgio Vasari and an impressive selection from the Carracci, including three previously unpublished works. The collection also incorporates notable Seicento and Settecento pieces, covering historical subjects depicted by Ricci, Tiepolo, and Amigoni, alongside landscapes created by Panini and Canaletto. The catalogue pays tribute to Horace Walpole, the 4th Earl of Orford (1717-1797), who resided nearby on Arlington Street. It evokes his discriminating taste and connoisseurship within a gallery housed in an interior dating back to his era. The descriptions highlight the notable architecture of the eighteenth century, particularly the refined stucco decoration of the first-floor rooms and stairwell, which exemplify one of London's most distinguished interiors. Despite its modest exterior, Number 38 is esteemed for its opulent interior design, offering visitors a glimpse into the grandeur of the period. The restoration of this gallery adds significant value to the West End?s cultural landscape. The catalogue includes contributions from scholars who have informed the research, notably Giuliano Briganti, who provided insights on Vasari, and Mr J G Links, who offered expertise on Canaletto's works. These additions lend an academic depth to the presentation, enriching the understanding of the Italian treasures housed in the Walpole Gallery.

Pub Year 1991, See images for condition. About the book >.>.> Cinquecento Book by Walpole Gallery presents a unique collection of Italian sixteenth-century paintings, showcasing the difficulties in assembling artworks from this period and country. This fourth exhibition by the Walpole Gallery features an outstanding array of works, with more than half created on panel?a challenging feat, given the rarity of such paintings and the difficulty in securing loans. The exhibition includes notable rediscoveries, such as Tintoretto's Martyrdom of St Lawrence and Veronese's Mars restrained by Peace and Love. The Tintoretto work, mentioned in historical sources, was deemed too modern for its original commission at a family altar in S. Francesco della Vigna, Venice, eventually being replaced by a less bold interpretation by Gerolamo da Santacroce. Equally significant is the Veronese piece, which portrays a captivating secular subject and has yet to receive scholarly attention from Prof Pignatti. Additionally, the exhibition features Jacopo de' Barbari's Salvator Mundi, a Venetian panel that links the artistic legacies of Antonello da Messina, Alvise Vivarini, and Albrecht Dürer, further revealing the artist's role in this dynamic artistic context; it is believed that this work may have been painted in Germany. The exhibition also includes three altarpieces, which have been traced back to their original churches?an unusual achievement for sixteenth-century works. These pieces, along with a selection of unpublished cinquecento paintings, significantly enhance the understanding of Italian sixteenth-century art. The exhibition has been supported by Dr Boris Giancheri, the Italian Ambassador, who contributed the Portrait of a Collector by Bartolomeo Passerotti from the distinguished collection at the Italian Embassy.
