Zustand: Muy bueno. Second impression. 215 x 140 mm; pictorial wrappers; pp. (vi) + 52. Wrappers slightly rubbed. Very good condition. Serote's landmark first poetry collection, which won the Ingrid Jonker Poetry prize in 1973. Mongane Wally Serote is South Africa's poet laureate. "Renoster Books (founded by Lionel Abrahams, Eva Bezwoda and Robert Royston) published Mtshali's Sounds of a Cowhide Drum in 1971, which sold more copies of a South African poetry collection then and since. And this collection, with Mongane Serote's Yakhal'inkomo (the cry of cattle at the place of slaughter) that was published in the following year, changed the terrain of poetry in this country irrevocably. Though the literary magazines then were still entirely in the hands of white editors, the dominant poetic voices from then on were black and they carried a sense of conviction and authority not heard before, and a determination not to be dislodged from speaking." - Siebrits & Gardner: South African Literary Magazines 1956 - 1978.
