No. 124 is a biography of Vic…torian novelist Elizabeth Gaskell, best known as the author of "Cranford" (1853), "North and South" (1854) and "Wives and Daughters" (1865). Gaskell"s works provided a detailed portrayal of Victorian society, and she often framed her stories as critiques of contemporary society. She usually emphasized the role of women in her work and provided complex and realistic female characters. First edition. No. 156 is a biography of novelist and poet Thomas Love Peacock. Known for his satirical novels, Peacock was more interested in the interplay of ideas and opinions than of feelings and emotions. Wallis (Longman, Hurst, Rees, and Orme; London; 1811) The volume on Sidmouth is illustrated, but the plates for the volume on Tewkesbury were published separately with the large octavo edition. Illustrated with a folding frontispiece and a folding map to the volume on Sidmouth. Collated, complete. The volume on Tewkesbury explores the development of the town, including the history of the abbey and abbey church, and of various other public institutions, such as the grammar school. The volume on Sidmouth, which is a scarce volume, is divided into two parts, with a history and description of Sidmouth in the first part, and a history and description of surrounding towns in the second part. In a half morocco binding. Externally sound, with shelf wear to the boards and splitting to the front joint. Rubbing to the joints, extremities and head and tail of the spine. Front hinge is slightly strained but is held firmly. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, except for a little offsetting to the text of the Sidmouth volume. Very Good.
