First Edition. Line engraving by Robert Wallis entitled 'Nemi', depicting the lake in Italy after a drawing by J. M. W. Turner. An attractive Italian pastoral scene. 1842. A nice clean copy of this engraving. Steel engraving, printed on paper. A lovely copy of this engraving. Good clean copy, with fractional darkening only. No significant flaws. The image is 23.5cm x 34cm. The sheet is 45.5cm x 57cm. Conforms to V & A engraving Accession E.4959-1946. Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851), a major figure of Romanticism, depicted Lake Nemi, a volcanic lake southeast of Rome, in several works. Discovered by the artist during his trip to Italy in 1819 the landscape inspired studies of the motif and later completed canvases, such as Lake Nemi (circa 1827-1828), an oil painting London. Robert William Wallis (17941878) was a leading English engraver renowned for his interpretations of J.M.W. Turner's landscapes. Trained by his father, Thomas Wallis, he became a key figure in 19th-century printmaking, specializing in steel and line engravings that captured Turner's atmospheric effects. .
