Waller was a prolific American writer who wrote her many novels from her home in Bethel, Vermont. I am pleased to offer a First Printing of the First Edition of her work: A Cry in the Wilderness, a story about life along the St. Lawrence River in Quebec. This small hard cover book (5 ½ x 7 ¾ inches, 428 pages plus 4 pages of publisher s adverts) was published by Little, Brown and Co. of Boston. It is bound in dark maroon boards with gilt titles on cover and spine. There is one illustration, a color plate by Arthur I. Keller as the Frontispiece. Condition: This book is in very good condition. There has been some rubbing to the boards, especially along the gutters and some minor bumping to the corners and spine tips. The spine is darkened but still legible. Inside, the book is unmarked and the interior pages are clean and bright throughout, without any toning or foxing. I was at a bit of a loss with this book when happily and by coincidence I found a short Wikipedia article about the Author. I have excerpted some parts of it for your information below. Mary Ella Waller (March 1, 1855 June 14, 1938) was an American writer and educator from New England (actually Bethel, Vermont) whose work encompassed children's stories, translations of German verse and more than twenty novels. Her earliest works were her most successful. Through the Gates of the Netherlands received praise from critics: One of the most delightful of the holiday books of travel is Miss Waller's Through the Gates of the Netherlands. It is a thoroughly enjoyable record, half story, half traveler's diary, of some memorable months spent in Holland and the Netherlands. The author writes interestingly and easily of the people and their customs, of famous buildings and places of historic interest, and especially of the Dutch painters and their work. She personally visited many of the scenes immortalized in Dutch masterpieces and sought out the sources of inspiration of many of the masters . the book is beautifully illustrated with numerous full page pictures in sepia, most of them reproductions of famous masterpieces by Dutch painters. I am therefore very pleased to be able to offer a nice copy of: Through the Gates of the Netherlands, by Mary E. Waller. This medium-sized hard cover book (6 x 8 ½ inches, 337 pages) was published by Little, Brown and Company of Boston, dated 1907 and according to my research, this is the First Printing. The book is bound in green cloth with gilt titles on cover and spine and a multi-colored and very handsome coat of arms of the Royal Family in the Netherlands. As noted in the Wikipedia article, the book is well-illustrated with reproductions of famous Dutch artists painting the scenes the Author describes. The list of illustrations includes the Frontispiece and 24 other plates. Most of these plates are guarded with captioned tissue. The top edge is gilt. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The hard covers are a bit dust-dulled to be sure and there has been some rubbing and bumping to the boards. The rear board is a bit soiled. The gilt top edge of the pages is a bit tarnished. Inside, the book is unmarked and the pages are generally clean throughout although a bit toned. There is one small stain at the base of the pages from page 8 to 25. There is no foxing. The hinges are intact, and the binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.…
