Contains a… frontispiece, and two tipped-in photographs to the front end papers. Originally inspired by the Oxford Movement, Hole became an established preacher, particulalrly appealing to the dock workers at Chatham when Dean of Rochester from 1887. Hole was also considered an expert on roses, regularly judging competitions and writing A Book About Roses in 1869. In red half calf, with marble paper boards. Externally, a couple of fading patches to boards. Rubbing to joints and edges, with cracking to joint heads, a little heavier to rear joint. Bumping to the head and tail of the spine, and to the extremities. Creases to spine, and a couple of rubbing marks to calf extremities. Spotting to end papers. Two tipped in photographs to front end papers. Previous owner's signature to front free end paper. Internally, firmly bound, with minor wear to hinge between leaves pp.192-193. Walker, 230 Regent Street W'. Smiles has 'no doubt' that Walker will let Bacon 'have a copy' (i.e. Bacon will not be getting a free copy from Smile…s). Smiles's book 'Physical Education' was 'published by me no less than 44 years ago. It had a small sale, and is now quite out of print. Though pretty good at the time, there are now far better works on the subject.'.
