The firm of Boni & Liveright, Publishers, was established in 1916 and like many other businesses roared in the swinging '20s. Neither figure had any experience in publishing but, and more importantly, each was in their own way determined to be a success and had the capability of gambling. Liverirhgt in particular was the more entrepreneurial and a showman with an innate sympathy for literature and for those that wrote it. Liveright took chances, supporting up and coming authors, and duly became the publisher with the most significant influence on that industry in the US. By 1930, however, the firm was bankrupt and US publishing had changed irrevocably. Importantly the company stood firm against censorship, prudishness and repression. …
