Many of the early students also brought their slaves to the college with them. Upon Emancipation some of the African Americans of the community--mostly women--stayed on as servants, forming what is now called the Hollins Community. Although the servants played an integral part in the college's success, students were strongly discouraged from acknowledging them as people. Rules forbidding any 'familiarity' with the servants perpetuated a prejudicial attitude toward the African American community that would persist well into the 1940s. Determined to give voice to the African American community that served as the silent workforce for Hollins College, Ethel Morgan Smith [herself a graduate of Hollis College] succeeded in finding individuals to step forward and tell their stories."--jacket ; VG/VG. Vertical fold, minor creasing, "Jardine & Mattthison & Co, Shippers" written in blue biro to bottom edge of final page. Else, clean and bright. Very good A clean copy of the 1949 CEMA exhibition catalogue for a selection ("Part II") of 25 items, including paintings by Vanessa Bell, Patricia Preece, Ethel Walker and Albert Rutherston; including a one-page 'Forword' explaining the originals of the collection: formed in 1942 by CEMA (now the Arts Council) with funding from the Pilgrim's Trust, its object "was to introduce the work of contemporary artists to people throughout the country". From the library of Birmingham-based artists Catherine and Ernest Hill, with the brief note about shippers to p.4, likely in the latter's hand: perhaps Ernest Hill had a hand in arranging an exhibition of the CEMA collection in Birmingham? Ernest F. Hill, RBSA (1873-1960) was a British painter, arts educator and Vice President of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists (RSBA). An early Newlyn group member, he worked primarily in watercolour, favouring British landscape and coastal scenes; he exhibited at the Royal Academy until 1946, Royal Institute of Oil Painters, but his paintings were most often hung in Birmingham (CAI, 2021). Hill was Headmaster of the prestigious Bournville School of Art and Crafts, and was well-connected in regional cultural networks, as well as with the Cadbury family. Less in known of Catherine Hill, who was a watercolour artist, print maker and book binder. Their library reflected these interests, featuring numerous arts and crafts, typographical and fine press books, often in excellent condition, thanks to the addition of hand-marbled or clear wrappers.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - He Sent His Word to Heal Us is a collection of scripture-based prayers on healing that came from the author's Facebook prayer group praying for the healing of a friend from breast cancer. This book not only encourages readers toward prayer, but to a better understanding of God's responsibilities to our prayers. The author gives an honest take on what prayers are to God and how we should view God as not a genie answering our wishes, but a loving God who knows His will for our lives better than we do. The prayers stay true to the scripture references they are inspired by, but also present readers with logical prayers that they could easily say at any moment. The words aren't grandiose or too confusing to interpret but are straight from the Bible and written to be applicable to whatever situation a reader might be going through. Ethel Henderson Walker has a passion for bringing the truth and power of God's Word into everyday life through prayer. To this end, she has spent countless hours over the past twenty years in study of the Bible from the original Greek and Hebrew text. She lives in Victoria, Texas where she recently retired after over thirty years in early childhood and Christian education.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Karen Taker's House is a modern-day parable about stewardship that incorporates the elements of several Biblical parables. It is a picture book, but can speak to and encourage all ages toward better stewardship. The pictures are simple with not too many words on each page in order to keep even a young child's attention. It includes questions at the end that can be discussed or meditated on. Ethel Henderson Walker lives in Victoria, Texas where she recently retired after over thirty years in early childhood and Christian education. She has learned from experience that very young children are capable of learning and understanding more than they are often given credit for. Because of a lack of quality Christian materials in some areas, she often wrote and created them herself. She is excited to share some of those materials with others.
