Hard bound. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. Reprint edition. The most complete and best account of the ancient capital city of China, its structure, architecture and culture, on the eve of WWII - and prior to the depredations of the Communist party, rampant overdevelopment and 'modernisation'. Chapter…s provide intimate details of the neighbourhoods, by quarter (Legation, Forbidden City, Tartar City, Chinese City) and within these, section by section. Later chapters detail the Summer Palace, the Jade Fountain, temples in the Western Hills and elsewhere, the Ming Tombs, the Great Wall etc. While many other works describe life in Peking during the first half of the 20th century, none else come close to describing its riches and charm in such loving detail. The reprint edition includes an insightful introduction by Geremie Barme, damning in its indictment of the Communist destruction of the grand Imperial city that was Peking. This book offers a wealth of information and description that the reader will return to frequently. A 2x3 cm black mark at the bottom of the title page, all pages lightly browned, otherwise interior clean and unmarked. binding sound and tight with very good dust jacket . xii, 382 pp., 25 b&w plates, 29 maps and plans, appendices and index. (While the reprint did not include the large map that was at the back of the first edition, its reasonable price compared with the original, and the presence of Barme's excellent introduction, makes this a very attractive item.) Size: 22 x 15 cm.
