De auteur onderzoekt de prent als drager van populaire cultuur, educatie, moraal en vermaak, met aandacht voor zowel productie als verspreiding. Aan de hand van talrijke voorbeelden wordt de evolutie van iconografie, druktechniek en maatschappelijke functie geschetst. De studie plaatst de volksprent expliciet binnen haar sociale, pedagogische en economische context en benadrukt haar betekenis als visueel massamedium lang voor de opkomst van moderne media. De inhoud is thematisch en chronologisch opgebouwd. Aanvankelijk wordt de oorsprong van de volksprent in de vijftiende en zestiende eeuw behandeld, met aandacht voor houtdrukken, religieuze voorstellingen en moraliserende beelden. Vervolgens komen de zeventiende en achttiende eeuw aan bod, waarin de prent een belangrijk instrument wordt voor volksopvoeding, satire en actualiteitsverspreiding. Het negentiende en vroege twintigste-eeuwse deel focust op kinderprenten, schoolplaten, speelprenten en commerciële uitgaven, waarbij veranderingen in druktechniek, kleurgebruik en doelgroep worden geanalyseerd. De studie combineert kunsthistorische analyse met cultuurhistorische interpretatie en besteedt aandacht aan makers, uitgevers en publiek.
