Quarter bound in black and red cloth, with red and silver lettering to spine, title in blind to front board. Spine ends and corners lightly bumped, else fine. Small damp stain to top edge. Dust jacket has some bumping and light wear to extremities, a few short tears. Until the contents of this book were discovered in the vaults of the BBC, everyone believed that for more than two years of his life George Orwell wrote nothing whatsoever. Those ostensibly barren years were those during which Orwell worked as a radio producer at the BBC. It was a terrifying time - August 1941 to November 1943 - for World War II was going badly for the Allies. William J. West, while researching Orwell's life for another book, discovered an extraordinary cache of Orwell material in the archives of the BBC. Hundreds of essays, radio programs, dramatic adaptations, and letters were found, filed not under Orwell's name, but under the names of the various program announcers. This material relates to his work as a Talks Producer for the BBC broadcasting to India for the Eastern Service, and is particularly significant to his development as an author. One dustwrapper has the slightest bump to the cover lower inside corner, barely noticeable. The other dustwrapper has very minor creasing and slight indentations to the top edge in places. Overall fine in very near fine dustwrappers. Uncommon. With eight plates in colour and twenty-four illustrations in black and white. ***A unique copy, as the book has been bound upside down in the original boards. ***Very good in green illustrated boards. Whilst the boards are clean, there is quite a lot of foxing and fading, especially to the front board. Extremities of boards just very slightly rubbed - far less than is usually found. No bumps or creases to the fragile boards. Corners sharp. Internally also very good with just ownership initials and date in pencil to the front pastedown. None of the usual offsetting to the front and rear free endpapers. There is some internal foxing, mainly at the gutter between the title page and opposite page. Pages otherwise clean. No creases or tears. ***In a very good green illustrated dustwrapper, which replicates the design on the boards. Extremities of dustwrapper rubbed, especially along the edges of the spine. There is a very small amount of loss at the top of the spine. No other chips, tears or creasing. Very slight sporadic foxing, mainly to the front panel. No significant fading. Dustwrapper bright. ***228mm x 168mm. 48 pages including an index at the back of the book. ***'Victoria Mary Sackville-West, Lady Nicolson, CH (9 Mar 1892 - 2 Jun 1962), usually known as Vita Sackville-West, was an English author and garden designer. Vita Sackville-West was a successful novelist, poet, and journalist, as well as a prolific letter writer and diarist. She published more than a dozen collections of poetry and 13 novels during her lifetime. She was twice awarded the Hawthornden Prize for Imaginative Literature: in 1927 for her pastoral epic, "The Land", and in 1933 for her "Collected Poems". She was the inspiration for the protagonist of "Orlando: A Biography", by her famous friend and lover, Virginia Woolf. She had a longstanding column in The Observer (1946-1961) and is remembered for the celebrated garden at Sissinghurst created with her husband, Sir Harold Nicolson.' (Wiki) ***'The Hon. V.
