Professionally re-backed with most of the original spine laid down and later plain endpapers. Some old light dampstaining at the edges of the margins throughout, endpapers lightly toned with minor foxing, very good. "Prepared under the direction of the war department." Vol. 1: Third edition. 250pp. Illustrated with 32 engraved plates (some folding) plus 19pp of printed music. Vol. 2: Second edition. 232pp. Illustrated with 37 engraved plates (some folding). Scarce Confederate printing of Bvt. Lt. Col. William Joseph Hardee's manual of infantry tactics. This revised edition was an update of his 1855 original edition. It was commissioned by Jefferson Davis to include the long-range capabilities of the new 33-inch barrel rifle. There were many "bootleg" Confederate printings and Hardee worked with this Mobile publisher in an attempt to secure copyright. Each volume in this set has a small printed notice from Hardee pasted on the inside cover noting this copyright edition as the only "complete, correct and revised edition". The set is in good condition with some scuffing to the leather spines and some spotting and wear to the cloth covers. Internally the text in both volumes is in very good condition with no chips or tears. Vol. One's text has some scattered light foxing whereas Vol. 2 is quite clean. Both volumes have been collated and are complete.…

One fold out plate and 31/31 full page plates. 5.25 x 3.5", brown cloth, black leather spine, gilt lettering, 250pp with index including manuals, general calls, calls for skirmishers, table of contents. Covers very well worn, lacks most spine, cloth tape on the front cover which is detached as are the first two blank pages, pasted in newspaper clipping, ink names, occasional pencil notes/numbers, fold out plate torn, plates 10 and 11 (one page) detached else good. Textblock tight and clean. The newspaper clipping is titled "Officers Of The Union Continentals Of Buffalo" lists the names of the officers of this volunteer home guard starting with its leader, Millard Fillmore, the former president. He was listed as captain but his title was actually major. The 150 man unit was formed on April 27, 1861 to protect Buffalo and the vicinity from a possible Confederate attack. The company drilled twice a week so having a book like this would have been necessary. The regiment, in addition to providing protection, also escorted troops to the train station as they did on May 3, 1861 for four companies of the 21st New York infantry. SIGNED TWICE BY THE FORMER PRESIDENT AND MAJOR OF THE UNION CONTINENTALS MILLARD FILLMORE AND DATED MAY 3, 1861, SIX DAYS AFTER THE REGIMENT WAS FORMED AND THE SAME DAY HIS REGIMENT ESCORTED THE 21st NEW YORK INFANTRY.
