Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Several years ago, two of my colleagues and I had the opportunity to interview Fritz Heider-perhaps the most influential theorist in the field of social psychology (Harvey, Ickes, & Kidd, 1976). During our interview, Heider affirmed a belief that had… guided his career since the 1920s, the belief that the study of human relationships is the most important task in which social scientists can engage. Although many social scientists would profess to share this belief, it is nonetheless true that the study of human relationships has been one of the most neglected tasks in the history of the social sciences-including psychology. What Heider found in the 1920s-that most psychologists acknowledged the importance of studying human relationships but at the same time tended to focus their own research on more 'tractable' topics such as memory and cognition-is still very much evident in the 1980s. Even within the more specific domain of social psychology, a majority of researchers still choose to address those hybrid topics ('social cognition,' 'social categorization and stereotyping,' 'person memory,' etc. ) that relate most directly to traditional areas of psychological research. Still other researchers, while choosing to study such important interpersonal phenomena as altruism, aggression, conflict, and interpersonal attraction, tend to focus so exclusively on these isolated and abstracted phenomena that they fail to provide a more inclusive view of the relationships in which these phenomena occur.

After all, it is such regularities and consistencies that lend predictability to the behavior of individuals in social contexts-in particular, to those events that constitute dyadic interactions and group processes. In the search for behavioral consistencies, two theoretical constructs have emerged as guiding principles: personality and roles. The theoretical construct of personality seeks to understand regularities and consistencies in social behavior in terms of relatively stable traits, enduring dispositions, and other propensities (for example, needs, motives, and attitudes) that are thought to reside within individuals. Because it focuses primarily on the features of individuals, the construct of personality is fundamentally psychological in nature. By contrast, the theoretical construct of roles seeks to understand regularities and consistencies in social behavior in terms of the directive influence of coherent sets of rules and prescriptions that are provided by the interpersonal, occupational, and societal categories of which individuals are continuing members. Because it focuses primarily on features of social structures, the construct of roles is fundamentally sociological in nature.

Owen R. Lovejoy was a vehement opposer of child labour. He served as the general secretary of the National Child Labor Committee from 1907 to 1926, where Lewis Hine was a staff photographer and art director of their magazine 'Charities and Commons (later 'The Survey') between 1908 and 1917. Men at Work contains photographs made between 1920 and 1931, issued amid the worst employment crisis the United States had ever known. Hine saw it as a way of reaching out to schoolchildren, providing them with constructive role models and emphasising the human element of industry, with photographs of railroad employees, coal miners, aeroplane assemblers, steelworkers, and others. Among the most striking photographs are Hine's images of the construction of the Empire State Building, which Empire State, Incorporated, had used widely for publicity purposes. Hine always insisted on exerting control over the layout of his photographs, regularly requesting to see magazine proofs before publication. It is probably for this reason that he was not selected to work for the Farm Security Administration during the 1930s, with Roy Stryker, head of the Historical Division of the FSA, expressing concern that Hine may be difficult to employ and that it would be impossible to make the type of arrangements that he would have found satisfactory. Added frontispiece folding map (see note below), opening to 11" X 15" (ca); two small cello-tape repairs at inner margin; bottom left corner clilpped, costing about 1/2" of the neat line, else generally fresh and clean, B+/VG+. Overall a splendid copy of the book, very well-preserved in a handsome early twentieth century binding. A scarce work in its own right and an excellent source for the early history and prehistory of the Northwest Territories, including the Border Wars and early Native American settlements. Taylor, who began professional life as a newspaperman, began preparing his History after being appointed State Librarian of Ohio in 1852. He drew on earlier narratives by Christopher Gist, Robert Rogers, John Bradstreet, William Crawford, Henry Bouquet, George Rogers Clark, and others. Taylor's intention was to produce a sourcebook for primary schools in Ohio, but at least one later historian has observed that ".Taylor has woven his sources into his narrative; that is, it is not purely a source-book, but a history with full and copious illustrative extracts from original sources, and is, on the whole, a scholarly piece of work" (see Theodore Blegen, "James W. Taylor: a Biographical Sketch," in MInnesota History Bulletin v.1, no. 6 - Nov. 1916). As the sub-title suggests, this was to be the first portion of a multi-part work, but before later volumes were completed Taylor moved out of Ohio to Minnesota, and on to the political activities for which he is best remembered. The current copy has been expanded with the addition of three maps and thirty-eight pertinent engravings from contemporary sources, mostly portraits of historical figures named in the History. Of particular interest is the added folding frontispiece map: A Map of the British and French Settlements in North America, originally issued in the July, 1755 issue of The Gentleman's Magazine (SELLERS & VAN EE 5). Also inserted are a map of "Forts and Settlements in America, A.D. 1763" (8" x 10", source unknown); and Wm. Kemble's "Copy of the Map Attached to the Relations of the Jesuits of New France in 1670 & 1671 (5" x 7-3/4"; originally included in Monette's History of the Discovery and Settlement of the Valley of the Mississippi - NY:1846). A work that seldom appears in commerce (the last copy recorded for sale on Rare Book Hub was offered by Lathrop Harper in 1970; noted as "scarce in any condition" by Wessen as early as 1959).
