Book has no discernible faults other than an official Folio Society bookplate affixed to a front end paper. The mottled grey card slipcase is complete and undamaged, but is age-darkened around the spine and top edge (invisible when on the shelf). Folio Society number 264. The diary of Lt. H. A. Vossler, a cavalry officer in the 'Duke Louis' Chasseurs in the Wurtemberg contingent of Napoleon's Grand Army in Russia. He fought at Smolensk, Borodino and Moscow. He was taken prisoner by the Russians and after many privations and in ill-health, he was able to return home after a long march through Poland, Saxony and Bavaria. The manuscript of this German wartime diary was purchased at auction by the Folio Society and the translation was especially commissioned from Walter Wallich. The plates are reproductions of tinted lithographs by an artist who was caught up in the fighting in 1812. A splendid example of the Folio team coming up with an imaginative production of an important work, combining the full resources of the Society - acquisition, picture research, translation, design and production.
