One of Vossius?s ?more scientific tracts. [which] attracted considerable attention among his contemporaries? (ODNB): he sought to explain the motion of the tides, a question of increasing interest, with reference to the heat of the sun exclusively, instead of the stars, the moon, or other forces. At the end he also discusses the use of a mercury barometer for predicting storms at sea. The following decade the text was translated into English to help it reach a wider audience.

Prima edizione collettiva di 36 scritti di Vossius, molti dei quali pubblicati qui per la prima volta e che toccano argomenti di natura geografica, scientifica, astronomica, navale, militare. Include inoltre trattati sull'antica Roma ed altre importanti città del periodo classico, sulle grandi città cinesi, sulle arti e le scienze in Cina, sull'invenzione della polvere da sparo, sul Passaggio a Nord-Est (?De Patefacienda per Septentrionum ad Japonenses et Indos Navigatione?), sugli anelli lunari e sulle profezie sibilline. "Vossius era un grande ammiratore delle scoperte e delle invenzioni cinesi? (Löwendahl). Come in molti esemplari manca la carta di dedica a Carlo II, posizionata dopo il frontespizio, spesso asportata dopo la sua morte nel 1685. Figlio del filologo Gerhard Johann, Isaac Vossius assemblò quella che è considerata la migliore biblioteca privata del mondo. Noto per la sua eccentricità crebbe in una famiglia erudita, studiò greco antico, geografia e l'arabo. Dal 1641 viaggiò per l'Europa, (in particolare Firenze), conoscendo studiosi come James Ussher e Hugo Grotius e cominciando la propria collezione di manoscritti, finché nel 1644 tornato nella città natia divenne bibliotecario della città. Lo stesso anno divenne Fellow of the Royal Society di Londra. Nel 1648 fu nominato bibliotecario di corte di Cristina di Svezia, accompagnato dall'amanuense Cornelius Tollius. Alla morte del padre nel 1650, spedì la sua biblioteca personale in Svezia, che poi però abbandonò all'abdicazione della regina Cristina, da lui raggiunta a Bruxelles. Liquidò il suo compenso in libri, fra cui il Codex Argenteus. Bell'esemplare marginoso, lievissime e uniformi bruniture, alcune sottolineature sparse di antica mano.
