Text in English. 159 pp. Eino Kaila (1890-1958), Professor of Theoretical Philosophy at the University of Helsinki since 1930, and a member of the Academy of Finland since 1948, was the leading Finnish philosopher for three decades. With his personal charisma and eloquence, he introduced to Finland experimental psychology, Gestalt psychology, symbolic logic, logical empiricism, and modern philosophy of science. He was closely associated with the Vienna Circle, especially Schlick and Carnap, since 1929, even if he never accepted the narrowly positivistic trends of the Circle. Kaila's life-long ambition was to develop a holistic and "synthetic" philosophy of nature, which would bring together the most advanced results of physics, biology, and psychology. The articles of this volume are contributions to the international symposium Eino Kaila and Logical Empiricism, held in Helsinki, October 4--5, 1990, to celebrate Kaila's centennial anniversary. They discuss the background and the development of the Vienna Circle and Kaila's philosophical work. It is the first collection of essays in English on Eino Kaila's thought.
