All edges gilt. , Philip Adolphe Klier (c.1845 ? 1911), also known as Philip Klier, was a German photographer, who arrived in Burma as a young man around 1865 and spent the rest of his life there. Mainly working as self-trained photographer and businessman, Klier took hundreds of photographs at the end of the 19th century during the British colonial period in Burma. His photographs, taken both in his studio as well as on location, were mainly sold as picture postcards for foreign visitors. They have also been published in several books and collected in public archives. Among a small number of other photographers, Klier is considered as one of the earliest professional photographers in the history of today's Myanmar.Jean Philippe Vogel (1871 in The Hague ? 1958), popularly known by his initials J. Ph. Vogel, was a Dutch Sanskritist and epigraphist who worked with the Archaeological Survey of India from 1901 to 1914 and later, as Professor in the University of Leiden, where some of his fonds are currently located.George Craddock (1859-1934) was an Anglo-Indian photographer from Punjab. He worked in various cities throughout India, eventually settling on his studio in Lahore, where he died. G.W. Lawrie was a Scottish photographer active from 1883 to 1921. First and only contemporary edition, print run of just 500, well represented institutionally, but uncommon in commerce and still authoritative, reflected in the publication of three recent reprints. The text gathers papers originally published in the The Journal of the Punjab Historical Society in order to present the information "in a more accessible" form for "Government and State Officers as well as students of History". The papers gathered here in this "monumental and significant work" (Bes et al., p.92) provide a much needed survey of the history of the princely states of Western Himalayas including Kangra and its offshoots, Chamba, Kullu, Mandi, Suket, Bilaspur (Kahlur), Nurpur, Basohli and some of the offshoots of Jammu. The authors saw their task as essential on the face of the effects of modernization, obliterating the evidence and carriers of regional history, "A large part of the material has been acquired at a time when many causes are at work which are tending to destroy the isolation of the hills, and with it much of historical value. The generation that found pleasure in treasuring and transmitting historical lore is rapidly passing away, and we are fortunate in having secured so much of what still remains" (Preface). The authors between them shared immense knowledge of the region, gathered from extensive research, travelling the territory, and encounters with the local populations. Hutchison (1848-1936) was for sixty years a Church of Scotland medical missionary at Sialkot and then Chamba, in the latter place the sole medical man for over ten years continuing his work at the leper colony right until his death. "He was keenly interested in geology and archaeology, and was associated for a time with Sir Aurel Stein in his researches in the Punjab. He also investigated the history of the States of the Outer Himalayas and made valuable contributions to gazetteers. A feature of Dr. Hutchison's long service was the arduous journeys. which, year by year he made among the high mountain ranges of the Himalayas, carrying succour to the far-distant dwellers therein" (obit.). His colleague, Jean-Philippe Vogel (1871-1958), was considered perhaps the greatest Sanskritist of his age. On his first visit to India in 1900, he was "persuaded to accept a post in the Archaeological Department. For most of the next ten years he was Superintendent of the Northern Circle with headquarters at Lahore, and was responsible for the preservation of some of India's most famous monuments, including the magnificent groups of Mughal palaces, mosques and tombs at Lahore and Delhi. Not only did he watch with unremitting care over their repair, but he became no mean authority on their history and architecture. Vogel's heart, however, was less with the Moslem than with the earlier Hindu and Buddhist antiquities. Several summers he spent in the remote highlands of Chamba State, and the volume in which he described the monuments and antiquities of that region was a model of patient research and scholarship" (obit.). In 1903 Vogel collaborated with John Marshall in excavations at Charsada, the ancient Pushkalavati, on the Swat River, and during the next six years did much useful digging on his own at the famous Buddhist sites of Kasia and Saheth-Maheth. For the last two years of his career in India he was Director-General of Archaeology. Soon after retirement he was appointed to the chair of Sanskrit at Leiden, in 1925 founding the Kern Institute there as a centre for excellence in the study of the art and archaeology of south and south east Asia. The two later collaborated on a history of Jammu. Neat embossed ownership stamps of Kaikobad Aderji Gai (1881-1969) a Parsi merchant "Supplier of Daily Needs to the Frontier" who furnished provisions to the British Legation in Kabul from the 1920s onwards. Well read, his personal library was considered one of the finest in Peshawar, he was also an avid antiquarian, many objects on display in the Peshawar Museum were donated by him.
