First Blaeu edition of Roemer Visscher's (1547-1620) youth verses, titled Brabbelingh ('Gibberish', or 'Baby-talk'). It is a curious collection of verses, divided into 7 'Schocks' of 'Quicken' (epigrams: pp. 9-101); 2 Schocks of 'Rommelsoo' (rubbish, litter: p. 102-122); 'Raedtselen' (riddles: pp. 123-126); 'Tuyters' (laudatory poems: pp. 127-136); 'Jammertjens' (lamentations: pp. 137-150); 'Tepel-wercken' (poems from his early youth, such as 'T lof van rethorica', 'Het lof van een blauwe scheen', and 'T lof van de mutse' (pp. 151-186).All these unpolished, sometimes quite rude youth verses, however, are mirroring the daily life in Amsterdam during the last decades of the sixteenth century in an inspiring and unprecedented way. The two friends, Roemer Visscher and Hendrick Laurensz. Spiegel are walking in Amsterdam, joking about almost everything, including girls, priests and the Catholic faith, and alluding to the gossip of the day. This work is often bound together with the Visscher's Zinne-poppen.With annotation in ink on first blank and a library stamp on the back of the title-page. A fine copy.l Simoni V-201; De Vries, Emblemata, 56 (1669 edition); Van der Aa, Biographisch woordenboek der Nederlanden VII, 75; STCN 7 copies. Contemporary vellum. Woodcut emblem on title-page, 2 engraved emblems with jesters titled "Elck heeft de zijn" and ''Quaeso''. Pages: 220, (2) pp. …

Third edition of a popular and witty Dutch emblem book written by Roemer Visscher (1547-1620). The work consists of three series of 60 emblems, each with a motto in Latin or Dutch, a two-line verse below, and a short explanation on the facing page. The emblems are typical for the Dutch engraver Claes Jansz. Visscher (1586-1652): instead of the usual mythological iconography of traditional emblems, Visscher takes simple objects or subjects from daily life and sets them in their natural environment, in a city house or in the country, and with a perfectly chosen arrangement or action he directly comes to his point in a clear, yet entertaining way. Visscher's work was epoch-making: he was one of the first artists to depict the typical, natural Dutch landscape, breaking with older conventional images. With armorial bookplate on pastedown. Slightly browned, but otherwise in very good condition. Binding also very good, ties only slightly frayed.l Landwehr, Emblem and fable books 874; La Fontaine Verwey II, p. 63; STCN 841509018; De Vries, Emblemata 56; cf. Praz 530 (first edition). Contemporary, slightly overlapping, vellum, manuscript title on spine, green ties and red sprinkled edges. With engraved emblematic title page, an emblem on the back of A5, showing a jester captioned "Elck heeft de zijn", and 193 engraved emblems by Claes Jansz. Visscher, in text. With 2 engraved emblems pasted on first blanks (including a repeat of the emblem on A5). Pages: [10], 196, [4] leaves.…

Ad 1: Fourth edition of a popular and witty Dutch emblem book written by Roemer Visscher (1547-1620). The work consists of 3 series of 60 emblems, each with a motto in Latin of Dutch, a two-line verse below, and a short explanation on the facing page. The emblems are representative for the Dutch engraver Claes Jansz. Visscher (1586-1652): instead of the usual mythological iconography of traditional emblems, Visscher takes simple objects or subjects from daily life and sets them in their natural environment, and with a perfectly chosen arrangement or action he directly comes to his point in a clear, yet entertaining way. The present edition is a later edition of the one edited by Visscher's daughter: Anna Roemer Visscher (1583-1651). Anna enlarged her father's work with 10 emblems called the Minne-poppen, or emblems of love, and also added a 2-line distich. Ad 2: Second edition of a poetic work by Roemer Visscher, containing the poems he wrote in his youth. The title, Brabbelingh can be translated as "gibberish" or "baby-talk". The work is divided into several parts, each dealing with a different kind of poetry, some are from his very early youth, others are laudatory poems, epigrams, riddles, lamentations etc. Included at the end are several poems by Visscher's friend Hendrick Laurensz. Spieghel (1549-1612). All the poems are rather unpolished and sometimes quite rude; however, they do mirror the daily life in Amsterdam during the last decades of the sixteenth century. With the bookplate of Garmt Stuiveling on pastedown and bookplate of H. Boekenoogen on flyleaf. A small marginal restoration on page 52, some pencil notations, and a few small spots. Overall a very good copy.l Landwehr, Emblem and fable books 875; Praz, p. 530; De Vries, Emblemata 57. With engraved title-page, an engraved emblem on the back of A5, and 193 engraved emblems by Claes Jansz. Visscher. Pages: [10], 196, [4] ll.; 212, [4 blank] pp. With: (2) VISSCHER, Roemer. Verticale vouw.
