According to the Preface, this book was originally compiled by "a gentleman of considerable knowledge and experience at the bar, for his own more immediate use" (iii). The ownership signature may be that of the Jacob Kinney who was County Clerk of Augusta County, Virginia, from 1793 to 1818. Kinney also served as a state senator. The bookseller's ticket is that of "H. & P. Rice, / Booksellers, / No. 16, South Second, and / No. 50, Market-street, / Philadelphia."
