Nel 2012 ricorre il quinto centenario della morte di Amerigo Vespucci, uno degli scopritori del continente americano, e soprattutto colui che gli ha conferito i…l nome.La Soprintendenza Speciale per il Patrimonio Storico, Artistico ed Etnoantropologico e per il Polo Museale della città di Firenze vuole ricordare il grande navigatore nato a Firenze nel 1454, con una mostra dedicata alla civiltà del popolo indigeno del Nord America, ed in particolare di quelle terre dove dal Seicento, fino a tutto l'Ottocento, i colonizzatori europei penetrarono nella loro avanzata verso l'occidente.Per la realizzazione di questo ambizioso progetto, la Soprintendenza si è avvalsa della collaborazione del Gilcrease Museum di Tulsa, in Oklahoma, uno dei musei più importanti per la ricchezza di testimonianze storiche del continente nord-americano e per la più grande collezione di manufatti d'arte e artigianato relative alla storia del West americano. Fondato nel 1949 dal petroliere Thomas Gilcrease, della nazione indigena Muscogee della popolazione dei Creek, il museo costituisce un unicum nel panorama americano per l'eccezionale vastità delle sue collezioni raccolte in gran parte dal suo stesso fondatore, animato da un profondo interesse per la storia dei suoi antenati e delle altre popolazioni indigene. Proprietà della città di Tulsa che ne condivide l'amministrazione con l'Università della città, il Gilcrease Museum rappresenta un punto di riferimento fondamentale per gli studi sui nativi d'America.L'esposizione fiorentina, che presenterà una scelta dei pezzi più preziosi e significativi del museo americano, si aprirà nell'Andito degli Angiolini con una sezione storica di presentazione delle varie fasi della scoperta dell'America e della sua colonizzazione; attraverso una mappa verranno localizzati gli insediamenti delle maggiori tribù prima e dopo l'esodo dalle loro terre. In questa stessa sezione si toccheranno aspetti come l'organizzazione sociale delle tribù prima della colonizzazione e la successiva contaminazione della cultura indiana con la cultura occidentale; particolare attenzione avranno le testimonianze iconografiche dei primi del Novecento di un grande fotografo ed etnologo statunitense, Edward Curtis, che si dedicò a documentare la civiltà dei nativi ormai a rischio di estinzione.Nella Galleria del Costume, la mostra avrà uno dei suoi luoghi più suggestivi nella sala della Meridiana sul cui soffitto l'affresco settecentesco del pittore di corte medicea Anton Domenico Gabbiani, celebra Amerigo Vespucci accanto a Galileo Galilei, con allusioni alla scoperta del Nuovo Mondo ed ai suoi abitanti. Questa che sarà la sezione più importante e dal taglio antropologico, esporrà manufatti delle varie Nazioni indigene, oggetti d'uso e cerimoniali: i ben noti caschi piumati, vasellami, armi, gioielli delle più varie forme, tipologie e materie, quali collane fatte con zanne e unghie di animali, splendidi abiti in pelle animale con vivaci decori realizzati il più delle volte con perline di vetro dai colori brillanti, e altri capi d'abbigliamento maschile e femminile. Come ricco corredo iconografico, alle pareti saranno esposti dipinti, sculture e fotografie del XVIII e XIX secolo, eseguiti da artisti che entrati in stretto contatto con i nativi ne hanno rappresentato la vita quotidiana: fra questi si distingue Joseph Henry Sharp, cui appartiene il capolavoro della mostra che occuperà la sala da ballo della Galleria: Crucita, una ragazza di Taos.La mostra consentirà finalmente al grande pubblico di apprezzare dal vivo significative testimonianze della civiltà dei nativi d'America, nota al pubblico solo attraverso le fantasiose ricostruzioni della filmografia americana e esclusivo oggetto di studio degli Antropologi culturali.
