Giuseppe Viola Zanini was an architect, painter, cosmographer, and architectural theorist. This work, one of the most important technical treatise of the 17th century, is based on the Vitruvian system and strongly influenced by Palladio's example.?Zanini's treatise is distinguished by its regional focus. Aimed at a local audience, Zanini's ideas were exemplified through buildings and works of art predominantly drawn from Padua and nearby north Italian cities. Zanini's main contribution is that he provides the first formal discussion of the principles of quadratura ceiling painting, a subject explored in great depth by other 17th century authors, such as Agostino Mitelli. This large work is divided into two books. The three sections of the first book deal with the origins of architecture, building materials, and the 'elements' of architecture. The second book is devoted entirely to the five orders of architecture. The third section of the first book concerns the harmony of parts and decoration of buildings, but also the layout of buildings and their orientation, instructions for finding water, wind, and the zodiac among many other subjects? La maggiore variante rispetto alla prima edizione è il curioso scritto, apposto in fine al volume, circa la pulizia dei camini. Seconda edizione, dopo quella sempre padovana del Bolzetta (1621), di un articolato saggio teorico pratico di architettura, originariamente previsto in tre volumi. Ne è autore il cartografo e architetto Giuseppe Viola Zanini (Padova, 1575-1631), proveniente da famiglia impegnata in campo edile e allievo di Vincenzo Dotto. La prima parte si occupa delle tecniche di costruzione, e dei relativi materiali, la seconda scende nel dettaglio dei cinque ordini architettonici. "Particolarmente importante è il primo libro di Viola Zanini dedicato al magistero costruttivo del suo tempo, argomento che anticipa la letteratura tecnica che si andrà affermando proprio nel corso del Seicento: interessanti sono ad esempio le considerazioni statiche sulla forma degli archi e sull?impiego dei tiranti metallici, oppure l?esposizione delle modalità di assemblaggio di centine e capriate lignee, di esecuzione di pavimenti in terrazzo veneziano, di intonaci a marmorino, di coperture a lastre di piombo, e così via. Il contenuto del secondo libro, ispirato alle teorie di Vitruvio, Alberti e Palladio, costituisce in verità una stanca ripresa della precettistica degli ordini: il sistema esposto da Viola Zanini venne preso in considerazione, sottolineandone debiti e limiti, dal francese Roland Fréart de Chambray, che lo mise a confronto con quello dell?Alberti e degli altri maggiori trattatisti del Rinascimento nel suo "Parallèle de l?architecture antique et de la moderne" (Paris 1650).
