Name of previous owner in ink on fep. This is one of the Military Classics, a Series of military masterpieces on various phases of war. Waldemar Erfurth (4 August 1879 - 2 May 1971) was a German general of infantry, and writer. Erfurth served in World War I, winning the Iron Cross 1st Class and the Knight's Cross of the Royal House Order of Hohenzollern. After the War he continued service in the Reichswehr of the Weimar Republic. During the Second World War he was a liaison officer in the Finnish headquarters 1941-44. He wrote a books about Surprise and the Murmansk railroad and a war journal from 1944. Stefan Thomas Possony (March 15, 1913 - April 26, 1995) was an Austrian-born US economist and military strategist and a Senior Fellow and director of International Studies at the Hoover Institution. He conceived the US Strategic Defense Initiative. General Erfurth's book on Surprise in War is the first treatise on the importance of surprise in modern military literature. To asses the real value of General Erfurth's book, one must realize that it amounts to a more or less complete break with traditional military thinking. Written before the outbreak of World War II, this is a compelling book on military strategy, in particular the doctrines of surprise and the flank attack. Almost breaking completely with traditional military thinking, despite citing ideas which tally with the doctrines of Clausewitz, Moltke and Schlieffen, Erfurth's work is indicative of the vast amount of thinking and writing about warfare that took place in the inter war years in Germanyâ"a crucial element to any nation dedicated to having an effective army and navy.
