Soft cover. Zustand: New. This book is about the blackflies which are well known for their biting nuisance and disease transmission and considered second as the most harmful group of insects after the mosquitoes in affecting the human health. Information about blackfly in India is scanty despite of their medical and veterinary importance. This monograph provides summarised and update information on biology, diagnosis, pest status and management of the Indian blackflies. The emphasis has been made on blackflies of northeast India where they are threatening the public and animal health and have negative impact. The introductory chapters deal with the importance of the blackflies in India as human and domestic animals pests and listed man biting species for the first time. Three species namely, S. himalayense, S. indicum and S. nodosum are reported as highly anthropophilic. The subsequent chapters with illustrations deals with biology, collection of blackflies and their preparation, preservation and rearing for species diagnosis by using morphological, cytotaxonomical and molecular characters. The use of DNA taxonomy along with morphology and ecology is emphasised for identification of cryptic or sibling species within the species-complexes especially in species-complexes of medical problem. Identification keys for 73 Indian species are given for the first time. The book ends with a chapter on the lesson learnt, practical tips and future research for study of blackflies in the country. This book is a step-by-step guide for the blackfly study in this region.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This book looks closely at herbal product development and commercialisation. In spite of an ever-growing demand, there is a dearth of safe and effective herbal products that meet consumers' expectations. Therefore, this book takes it upon itself to elaborate on the development process of herbal insecticides, repellents and biomedicines from a commercialisation point of view. The introductory chapters deal with the various strategies for disease vector control and provide an overview of herbal biomedicines. The subsequent chapter describes plants with mosquito larvicidal activity, including a comprehensive list of lethal concentrations against different mosquito species. The chapter on Himalayan plants discusses potential botanical insecticide sources and their chemical constituents before delving into the topic of natural insecticides of microbial origin and their efficacy against mosquitoes. Plant-derived insecticides belonging to different chemical classes and the extraction, purification and characterisation of bioactive compounds are illustrated, as well. The recent technological advances in the formulation of microbial, biochemical and botanical insecticides are also reviewed. Three chapters focus on important medicinal plants useful for treating human ailments, with special reference to the traditional healing practicesof northeastern India. This is followed by a chapter on the production, use and safety of biopharmaceuticals and edible, plant-based vaccines. The intellectual property issues related to herbal products in India including patents, trademarks, geographical indications, trade secrets and traditional knowledge resources are plainly examined. The book ends with a chapter on the herbal product registration process in India, wherein the data requirements for registration, clinical efficacy trials, toxicity studies, quality control, packaging and labelling are clearly explained. In conclusion, this bookis a step-by-step guide for the development of safe, effective and commercially viable herbal insecticides, repellents and biomedicines.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. The book "Mosquito-borne Diseases in India: Current Status and Prospects of Elimination" provides a comprehensive exploration of the current understanding of mosquito borne diseases in India. It aims to stimulate research interest among emerging scientists, vector biologists, and entomologists, guiding them in comprehending disease epidemiology and devising effective intervention strategies for transmission control and elimination. Each chapter delves into the endemic diseases prevalent in India, such as Malaria, Lymphatic Filariasis, Japanese Encephalitis, Dengue, Chikungunya, and Zika, providing detailed insights into disease transmission dynamics. It highlights key areas for research, emphasizing the need for decisive actions to disrupt disease transmission effectively. The book not only consolidates scattered knowledge but also serves as a vital reference material for teaching and research purposes. Additionally, book also covers fundamental aspects of disease epidemiology, supplemented with a glossary to aid understanding for students and beginners in Medical Entomology research. With its relevance to control programs, medical colleges, and researchers, this book serves as a valuable resource, encouraging ongoing research efforts to overcome the challenges on the path towards ending disease transmission targeting elimination.
