Alrededor de 1880 comenzó a realizar las primeras ilustraciones, que interrumpió en 1881 un ataque de hemiplejia. Lo que había logrado terminar se publicó en Francia en 1882: noventa dibujos que ilustraban algo más de la mitad de los capítulos de la obra. La parte derecha del cuerpo de Vierge quedó completamente inmovilizada y, además, perdió el habla y la memoria. Con paciencia y trabajo logró aprender a manejar la mano zurda, y por encargo del editor británico Fisher Unwin, a partir de 1888 concluyó con la izquierda El Buscón, que apareció en Londres en 1892 con un total de 120 dibujos. Aunque nació en Madrid, Daniel Urrabieta Vierge pasó en París la mayor parte de su vida, donde se convirtió en uno de los más famosos ilustradores de Europa. Amigo y colaborador habitual, entre otros, de Victor Hugo, alrededor de 1880 emprendió su gran ambición de dibujar El Buscón de Quevedo, tarea que interrumpió en 1881 por un ataque de hemiplejia que le dejó sin habla y paralizó la parte derecha de su cuerpo. Poco a poco aprendió a dibujar con la zurda, con la que concluyó los 120 dibujos que completan esta obra, que sería publicada en Londres en 1892. Esta edición ofrece íntegra la versión completa, tal y como la concibió Urrabieta Vierge. Arturo Echavarren, filólogo experto en literatura del Siglo de Oro, ha vertido al español actual el opaco y conceptista texto de Quevedo, para que resulte tan claro y luminoso como las imágenes que lo ilustran.

Number 238 of an edition limited to 845 copies. Though the endcap for Volume I is in poor condition, this is a pleasing set, each volume bright and fresh; each protected by its own slipcase and endcap. The bindings are bright and attractive, with only slight rubbing and corner wear to volume I and light bumping to the upper fore-corner of the front panel of volume II. The inner hinges of volume II are cracked, else all inner hinges sturdy. The contents of each volume are unmarked and fresh; all tissue guards are present and intact; there is no foxing to contents, plates, or guards. Contents complete; collated March 26, 2022. The very scarce slipcases are fair to good only, showing splits to joints. The equally scarce endcaps (now in Mylar) are mostly good, with cracks to hinges. The endcap for volume I is in poor condition, its cracked hinges at one point having been repaired with tape, leaving residue at edges and on spine, its label with tape-discoloration at edges, and abrasion to head and to hinges. In our opinion, this is a very satisfactory set owing to its condition and to the presence of all slipcases and endcaps.
