Uncommon novel, ori…ginally published in France in 1921. It's "historical fiction" in a sense, but as the New York Times described it in 1922, "it is not a history of Salt Lake City as occupied by the Mormons so much as the story of the mental and physical anguish of a young widow who is unsuspectingly drawn into marriage with a Mormon and finds herself the second wife -- one of three wives, and perhaps others." A stage adaptation was presented in Paris in 1926, about which the Times correspondent commented that the playwright "obviously knows very little about Utah and the history of the Mormons and Mormonism and was forced to rely entirely upon Pierre Benoit, who also unfortunately knows very little concerning them, a fact which did not prevent his novel from obtaining immense popularity in France." (Nor did it prevent Benoit, whose best-known work is probably "L'Atlantide" (1919), from becoming a member of the Académie française in 1931.).

Ces deux années ont vu des cascades d'événements qui ont bouleversé brusquement l'échiquier politique. Certains y ont vu des exemples de révolutions. En janvier 1946, ce fut la ch…ute d'Élie Lescot, un président rétrograde, détesté pour des raisons multiples par la majorité de la population. Ce fait historique a suscité de grands espoirs de changement en profondeur. Des personnalités de la bourgeoisie éclairée, enthousiasmées par le rôle joué par les puissances occidentales dans la lutte contre le fascisme à l'occasion de la Seconde Guerre mondiale se sont prononcées en faveur de la démocratie libérale pour Haïti. Des jeunes de Port-au-Prince, particulièrement des lycéens et des étudiants éblouis par le succès de l'URSS sur le régime hitlérien en Europe, ont prôné publiquement le socialisme pour transformer la société haïtienne. Pourtant, aucune politique réelle n'a été appliquée par les gouvernements issus de la crise de 1946 pour transformer Haïti. Ce fut une grande déception.
