Peter George Patmore (1786-1855), in his first book, pretended to be a French nobleman traveling in England, sending letters to France, evaluating the English culture and the living popular writers -- Byron, Southey, Moore, Campbell, Scott, Coleridge, Wordsworth, Crabbe, Leigh Hunt, Shelley, Barry Cornwall. In the first volume preface Patmore admits that he was pretending to be French, having been discovered when the letters in v.1 were first printed in the "New Monthly Magazine". Patmore was a writer and editor for the magazines and knew the men he includes in these "letters"; some were close friends. He left out Lamb and Hazlitt - he was intimate with both. "Several of Lamb's most characteristic letters were addressed to him, as were also the curious epistles subsequently collected by Hazlitt under the title of the "Liber Amoris". The poet and critic Coventry Patmore was his son. Sion College Library stamps on the rear endpapers with signs of label removal from spine ends and some fading at spines (volume one slightly frayed at spine ends), overall sound, near very good with clean text. …
