In den WarenkorbJardine, dubbed by the press 'the Poor Man's Pastor', travelled to France to perform the ceremony. As a result, his vestry committee resigned and he resigned his living, emigrating to the United States. The cuttings are laid down on 19pp of a Victorian folio volume, in superior brown calf binding, tooled in gilt, with marbled endpapers, and 'HARMONY OF THE GOSPELS' stamped on the spine. As the title on the spine indicates, the volume contains the manuscript of a harmony of the gospels, covering 127pp, with the text written around columns of printed text cut from a printed bible. Most of the cuttings relate to controversy between the Church of England and Roman Catholic Church, and while the greater part are unattributed and undated, some come from sources including the Record, British Weekly, Defender, Liverpool Express, Catholic Opinion, Catholic Herald. Also present are two handbills. Topics include: scapular medals; 'Catholicism and Prosperity'; prayers for the dead; the St Hilary Case; Spanish Converts; Catholics and their press; 'Catholic M.P. as President of Protestant Mission'; Sunday boxing; the Catholic Encyclopaedia; 'Murder by Monk. Terrible Story of Monastic Corruption. Body cut in pieces'; Growth of Popery; the Pope's rebuke; the Immaculate Conception. The first (2pp., 12mo), dated 30 June 1910, is headed 'The Suggested New Royal Declaration. A Manifesto by the Church Association.' ('Alex. W. Cobham, Chairman'). The second (1p., 12mo, on orange paper) is an publishers' advertisement (by Robert White of Worksop and C. H. Collette of London) for the 1865 book '"I Believe in the Holy Catholic Church." A Controversial Correspondence between Charles Hastings Collette, Esq., Of London (Protestant), and Dr. Geraghty, Of Dublin (Roman Catholic)'. Also a circular typed letter from John P. Waterkeyn of the Society for the Maintenance of the Apostolic See, 11 October 1930, and a flier relating to Pontifical Flags on Holy Father's Day.

In den Warenkorb2pp., 8vo. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn. He begins by thanking Wilson for sending him 'the acct: of the Hoxton Academy', and continues: 'Sir Richd is concerned to own that some objections have been thrown in his way, wh caused him to withdraw his annual subscription from ye Hoxton establishmt, by some letters wh he receiv'd from the Revd Doctr Hawker of Plymouth, relative to a young man who was recommended by the Doctor, and soon dismiss'd from the Society, for no reasons whatever that appeared satisfactory to the Doctor or to Sir R H and which young man was received into the late Lady Huntingdon's connexions as posessing [sic] every qualification for the work of the ministry.' The 'transaction' appears to Hill 'an arbitrary one', and if it could be 'clear'd up', he would be 'happy to continue himself a subscriber to the Institution, wh he is persuaded has done much good and is founded on a pure evangelical basis.' Hoxton Academy was one of the most prestigious of the dissenting academies. In 1826 it moved to north London as Highbury College, and in the 1850s it was amalgamated into New College, London.

In den Warenkorb2pp, 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition, aged and spotted, with loss at foot of reverse of last leaf, the verso of which is addressed to 'Mr Palmer | Bookseller | 18 Paternoster Row'. The recipient is the theological bookseller Ebenezer Palmer the elder (c.1782-1866). Twenty-two lines of text in a difficult hand. The stridently pious tone perhaps hints at some degree of mental instability. The letter opens: 'My dear Sir & friend in the LORD | I greet you in Him'. He avails himself of the opportunity 'of writing by Mr paris', and calls for blessings on Palmer's house for his work with the Gospel Tract Society and Village Sermon Society. He feels sure that the 'friends' in the former with 'concur in the promotion' of the latter, 'the object of both being one & the same'. He ends with the suggestion that Palmer, 'through some subordinate Person', should 'arrange so as to get many of he little bookselling Pamphlets [?] to purchase for [?] & for ready money a quarter of an hundred at a time the Knowledge of the V S Society would soon be diffused thro the Cities & Borough of Southwark.' Hawker was the grandfather of the eccentric Cornish clergyman and antiquary Robert Stephen Hawker, author of 'The Song of the Western Man' ('And shall Trelawny die?').

In den WarenkorbA nice association with a man widely regarded as the greatest English poet of the First World War, and a scarce item of which not many copies can have been printed, and no other copy has been traced. 4pp, 8vo. Bifolium on laid paper. In fair condition, lightly aged, with slight creasing at head. Explanatory note on final page begins: 'The memorial to Wilfred Owen is cut on Portland stone by Michael Harvey from lettering drawn by Reynolds Stone, CBE, RDI. / The graves of Tom and Susan Owen, the poet's father and mother, and of his sister Mary are in the south-east corner of the churchyard. / Tea will be served by the ladies of the parish after the service at the old vicarage, now called The Glebe House, where Wilfred Owen lived from 20 October 1911 to 7 February 1913 while acting as lay assistant to the Rev. Herbert Wigan. A small display of books by and about Owen may be seen there.' The two central pages give the order of service, beginning with the text of Catherine Winkworth's translation of Rinkart's 'Now thank we all our God'. A list of the readings follows, with Owen's biographer Jon Stallworthy speaking about 'Wilfred Owen at Dunsden', and Ian Parsons about 'Wilfred Owen as Poet'. Letters by Owen to his mother ('The Sentry' and 'The Send-Off') are read by Stallworthy, the actress Jill Balcon, D. J. Enright and Peter Owen. The poets Ted Hughes, Geoffrey Hill and Robert Gittings read poems by Owen and extracts from letters. The memorial is dedicated by the Bishop of Oxford, and there is a 'Bidding Prayer' by Rev. Norman Print, Vicar of Dunsden.
