Leggera gora al margine della tavola e di alcune pagine. Bros…sura editoriale. "Monsignor Filippo Vespasiani illustro' in questa sua veramente dotta e pregevole dissertazione uno de piu' insigni monumenti dell'ecclesiastica antichita', qual e' il sacro Pallio onde vanno insigniti dal Papa i Patriarchi e gli Arcivescovi, e consiste in quella fascia di lana bianca colle croci nere, la quale aggira il collo, posa sulle spalle, e pende coll'un capo sulla vita, e coll'altra sul petto. Cotesta nobil insegna delle piu' cospicue dignita' della Chiesa cattolica si volea per alcuni storici originare dall'imperatore Costantino.Il Vespasiani pero', ammettendo eziandio il dono del manto imperiale, prova con bella, ma severa erudizione, che non puo' essere il Pallio sacro de' Metropolitani. Entra poscia a provare, che il Pallio non e' derivato ne' sommi Pontefici dall'EphodÂe dalÂRationaleÂdel Pontefice degli Ebrei,Âsebbene potea in qualche modo simboleggiarli; come simboleggia, neiÂRitualiÂe nelleÂLettereÂapostoliche,Âil buon pastore, che si leva sulle spalle la pecorella smarrita, o la croce che porto' in ispalla N. S. Gesu' Cristo. Monsignor Vespasiani, considerato un celebre passo di Liberato diacono, entro' nel pensiero che il pallio non sia altro che il pallio portato in vita da San Pietro, e dopo il suo martirio ereditato dai sommi Pontefici, come successori di Pietro, e portato da essi in segno dell'apostolica podesta'Â(Antonio Bresciani, Opere, 1866, p. 167).
