His drawings often depict towns, city gates and landscapes in the Netherlands and were sometimes based on earlier sources. Works of this type were frequently included in topographical collections such as the Atlas Coenen van 's-Gravesloot. Condition: fair, given age. Toning, foxing, staining and small losses; edges worn. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

A VILLAGE ALONG THE OUDE RIJN RIVER Drawing in pen and gray wash by Theodorus (known as 'Dirk') Verrijk (1734-1786). Size: 25 x 37.7 cm. Verrijk often made detailed sketches on-site and elaborated those in his studio. Along the banks of the rivers Vecht, Spaarne, and Oude Rijn, prosperous villages and country estates lined up in the 18th century and still do today. In this setting of beautiful houses, garden pavilions, covered walks, village churches, mills, and bridges, daily life is depicted so attractively that the laborious work of fishermen, boatmen, and labourers appears to our eyes more like an idyllic pastime than harsh reality. Verrijk's drawings contain an enormous amount of detail, and he captures all the particulars even in small towns and villages. Price: Euro 1.650,-.

Skilful drawing of the village of Overschie seen from the water. At the centre the village church surrounded by several houses, several figures alongside the canal and a small sailing boat on the canal. The viewing point and composition used by Verrijk strongly resemble, but are not identical to, those of the etching that Abraham Rademaker made in 1725.Overschie used to be a municipality in the province of Zuid-Holland, but in 1941 it was annexed by Rotterdam.Signed "d. Verrijk. del. ad. viv: 1761" in pen and grey ink on lower left, titled "Overt-Schie" in grey ink in lower middle and numbered "No. 2" in brown ink on lower right. Pen and brush and grey ink with grey wash, over traces of pencil, on laid paper, 176 x 271 mm. Within ruled ink border. Watermark: French lily in crowned shield. Left edge partly pasted on old mount (numbered 69 and 1090 on recto, old price on verso: "f 3 - 5 1/2"), a few tiny, hardly noticeable foxing stains in sky area, overall in excellent condition.
