No Jacket. 1st ed. xv+379; fr.pastedown has sig., ex-libris stamp and library donation label of same person, t.p. has impressed colourless round stamp of same, underlining + occ. marginal marking pp.12-17 (Clark Hull chapter by Koch), more seriously however verso last page, endpaper and rear pastedown a…re covered with pencilled notes and also have suffered some kind of adhesion problem as leaves have several holes and pastedown is wrinkled - if it is indeed the pastedown as it appears to be a leaf overlaying the pastedown. Green cloth covers clean and generally sound but spine faded and end-rubbed. Clearly a reference/working copy only of this important set of essays on Clark Hull, Tolman, Skinner, Kurt Lewin and Guthrie, with nearly half being devoted to Koch's merciless demolition of Hull's entire system (he died 2 years before publication and my suspicion, on no evidence at all, is that publication was delayed to spare his feelings, as the book emerged from a group effort in summer 1950). Essential reading for any serious historian of mid-20th century US behaviorism.

First edition.An addendum to the preface dated 1925 states that the author originally collected the material in this book for an address he had been asked to deliver at the formal opening of the new Assay Office: "Owing to the great loss of life due to the explosion of a bomb in September, 1920, and the consequent delay in the completion of the building under another superintendent the new edifice was opened without ceremony." The author was subsequently encouraged to make the material available in this book.

An historical sketch of the packet and market sloops of the 19th century, with a record of their names, together with personal reminiscences of certain of the notable North River sailing masters. William Edward Verplanck was a scion of the famous New York Verplanck family, which traces its history back to the New Netherlands Colony (now New York & New Jersey) from Holland. The Verplancks became quite prosperous and built a mansion on Wall Street in Manhattan. Around 1730, a colonial-style fieldstone house was built at Fishkill Landing on the Rombout Patent land on the Hudson River. Collyer was a riverboat captain from 1899 until his death in 1942, He cowrote ?The Sloops of the Hudson?- a memoir and history of the years when sailboats were the primary means of getting up and down the river. An exhaustive and complete work that drew on Collyer's background in a river-faring family, it is today considered the definitive history of that era and its boats. A scarce book, seldom found in nice condition. Illustrated. (illustrator). Signed.
